AP: WH officials are mulling "merits & appropriateness" of releasing photo of brain-splattered OBL

President Obama Watched Live Video Of Bin Laden Raid - via helmet cams

An elite crews of American forces killed bin Laden during a daring raid on Monday. Bin Laden was shot in the head during a firefight and then quickly buried at sea. White House officials were mulling the merits and appropriateness of releasing a photo.

<snip>

Senior administration officials said the DNA testing alone offered near 100 percent certainty that bin Laden was in fact shot dead. Detailed photo analysis by the CIA, confirmation by a woman believed to be bin Laden's wife on site, and matching physical features like bin Laden's height all helped confirmed the identification.

It's typical of President Obama's cultural and sociopolitical sensitivity that he doesn't want to offend the Middle East by immediately plastering the CIA's "detailed photo analysis" all over the front pages of newspapers across the world in order to satisfy the crazy deathers who now doubt Osama's death in the same way nutcase birthers doubt Obama's birthplace. I'm glad that I have a President who's not interested in gloating or inflaming Middle East sensibilities by releasing photos like a trophy hunter who's bagged a big catch.

1. I thought it was distasteful when Bushco released the photos of Saddam's sons
but I can understand the dilemma.

10. Those photos of sadaam's sons
were leaked by the Iraqi government, not by Americans. The same people responsible for the filming of his hanging.

Show the photos Mr. President. You'll only get headaches if you don't.

4. I'd be surprised if Congressional leaders have not seen the visual evidence by now.
However, I doubt the WH would let them do more than look at photos.

3. Nothing good would
come of this. It would inflame the wrong people, such as his followers. There is no constructive need to see the pictures.

15. We historians would like to see the photos
as pieces of primary source documents.

5. They are going to have to show something
or at the very least have the Navy Seals tell how it went down.

6. Why? Deathers can note that there's been not a peep of denial out of Al-Qaida since this happened.

I will wager there will be no further tapes of a taunting OBL on the eve of general elections, either.

They trashed genuine war heroes when it suited their purposes, despite the fact their guy was a deserter.

14. Currenlty Serving SEALS, heroes who 'got bin laden' ?
Those seem way different than Vietnam era swift boat vets.

7. I was thinking about that this morning...

Show the photos to congressional leaders, and a very few big-name media types, with severe restrictions - absolutely NO cameras or cellphones allowed, no exceptions. The photos should never be released under any circumstances.

I would really be sickened - as I was with Saddam's sons - if the photos were shown to the world.

12. I must admit
it's never a good feeling when one comes across a grotesque image, I would make an
exception and show some of the video, such as before and after, what I meant by that
is the moving of the corpse and the burial ceremony that took place on board the carrier.

That should be sufficient evidence for the public any one who still thinks that is not OBL
cannot be convinced and probably has other agendas.

My 2cents.

it's a photo of a dead body nothing more, nothing less. It's not pretty, but it's part of history it's no different than JFK's autopsy photos

18. They MUST relese the photos
and provide evidence that what the administration is claiming is true. There are too many conspiracy theorists out there and people are too cynical to just accept this without evidence.

Not sure what the delay is. The Islamists aren't going to like us whether we release photos or not. They're going to hate us regardless.
