Howard Dean: “It Is a Very, Very Good Speech. I Am Delighted"
“I am going to be blunt about this I have seen the speech. It was leaked. It is a very, very good speech. I am delighted. I'm frankly a little surprised. The president is mindful of the deficit. He makes it clear he wants to work with the congress but with the most extraordinary thing is he lays down the gap gauntlet. Millionaires will have to pay more taxes if we are going to cut kids and other folks dependent on it. He made it clear this is going be a shared sacrifice and the tax cut extended for the people who make a million a year is not going to be extended again if we are going to do anything about the deficit. That was extraordinary. There is a lot of great stuff about the environment. I have to say, in print, we'll see how he delivers it, it is one of the most substantive speeches I have seen him make.”

1. It was a great speech, one that spoke to today and tomorrow.
The President is fully aware of what we're capable of doing.

2. It was extraordinarily courageous...
to ask the wealthy to pay 2% more in taxes.

4. I liked the small business stuff too. "The Movement", if it honestly wants to be effective, needs to
concentrate on the bottom of the economic hierarchy more, not ignore the top, but put some numbers/persons underneath their demands, not political base-building at the expense of economic base building, but political base-building on top of economic base-building, NEW economic base-building.

7. Yeah, well, of course he's happy. They let him sit at the big people's table on Morning Joe today.

8. Oh so now HD is a "sellout" too?!!! You know, that's the basic problem with "the Left", it drives
off ANY support that is not doctrinaire. It won't take anything but 100%, so it stays small because most people just aren't going to conform 100%. Not that the Right doesn't do the same thing, but just that, practically speaking, folks at least have rea$on$$$$$ for being on the Right (and perhaps at least hiding the extent to which they are not 100% Right wing); there's nothing like that on the Left, so when they demand 100% purity, folks say, in effect, "Screw you." Or when the Left demands something/everything/purity for nothing, the answer tends to be "No, thank you."

9. Faint praise?
"...it is one of the most substantive speeches I have seen him make."

Think about that, and all of the speaches he's made, and think about what that means.

I believe the expression is "faint praise".

11. It's a speech Dean could've given.
The speech was tactical brilliance. The bones thrown to the Republicans were tiny at best.

Or, wait. Let me guess "DEAN HAS TO SAY THAT BECAUSE OBAMA/OBAMA'S PEOPLE/UNNAMED WHITE HOUSE SOURCES/THE PAPERBOY/SATAN THREATENED HIM!"
