24. I think there are at least two reasons Repubs didn't block this
And we should give credit where credit is due. First, to Senator Lieberman, who did after all work hard to achieve this. Second, to the White House: they secured the support of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Department of Defense, and ordered the report that came out in favor. It's a hard thing for even Republicans to go against the desires of the US Military.

Also, the Log Cabin Republicans deserve some credit. WE deserve credit for all our calls and letters.

The Republicans didn't go along with this out of the goodness of their hearts or their adherence to the Constitution and civil rights. Look how they stood against the 9-11 firefighters, and fought successfully against passage of the DREAM Act.

They did this because they have a lot of gay constituents, because they ran out of reasons to oppose it.

12. I predict more than 63 votes for repeal.
Some Republicans will switch now that they know it's going to pass.

18. Some Rs who voted for cloture will vote against the final bill
But all we need are 51 votes, so it's in the bag.

15. Our 4 calls and 2 letters to new Senator Kirk (R-IL) at least ...
got him to vote for cloture. Yay for all those who called his office (it wasn't easy).

Now, I fully expect him to vote against it in the final bill. In which case he will get no formal thanks from me. (A yea vote will get a thank you note and/or call.)

Mr. Frazzled called his office within a minute of his voting against cloture for the DREAM Act, about which we had also called, expressing his disappointment.

And even some surprises, like Senator Kirk from Illinois. I don't think his vote was expected.

Snowe, Collins, Brown, and Murkowski said they'd vote for repeal. And they DID this time, since the tax bill is now law.

And largely symbolic.

If it really mattered the GOP, and its Democratic Senate allies, would not have allowed it to pass

The rich are still booted, spurred and ready to ride.
The rest of us are still saddled, and ready to be ridden.

Most importantly the passive will glance at the headlines, and go shopping.
Those who have jobs, and money to do it with, at least.

27. You couldn't be more wrong when you say it's "largely symbolic."
This is history being made! I guess you don't know any gay people and/or don't CARE about gay people. Like Biden said, "This is a big f'in' deal!"

30. It's a national disgrace there was ever a vote.
We’ve dragged ourselves up to the level of every other OECD state, more or less, and it took a massive effort to actually do it. The win is gratifying—the need for the battle is a national embarrassment.

As with the passage of ACA, another triumph, by the way, the magnitude of any celebrations today are proportional, directly proportional, are a precise measure of, how far we are behind.

Winning this one is better than losing this one, but that's all it's better than.
