Will Smith helped Toby Keith dodge critical question
From the pre concert press conference: Will Smiths reaction to a question for Toby Keith. Certain members of Parliament and media personalities over here has deemed his presence inappropriate. Smith makes a joke of it all, so Keith doesn't have to respond.

In the end he stated that he does not understand the reaction, and that people are focusing on one song amongst 30 million records sold and 27 number one spots. – My country has sent 90.000 military troops to Afghanistan to fight evil. I want our boys to win and have expressed that. But that is not the kind of song i shall be playing tonight.

Hopefully this video would work for you too - press play.

3. Is Toby Keith "Country" or "Western"

I always have a hard time with those two genres...

6. There is no Western music
Hillbillies knocked the cowboys in the head, stole their hats and chaps.

17. Yeah and Texas Swing
But they don't call them the Country Music Awards for nothing. Do they even have a Western category?

19. No--I think Asleep At The Wheel and the occasional George Strait song
is about all that's left of Western/Texas swing. And country is actually more of pop music anymore.

20. Ah... So when they say "country and western"

They are referring both to their cacaphonous caterwauling, and to the merciful periods of cessation therebetween.

Got it.

13. I couldn't live there either
My husband always talks about moving to TN because both his son and sister live down there. I tell him no, I wouldn't last a month with my outspoken political views. I'd be "disappeared". From people I've come across in visits to TN, I am amazed Al Gore came from there.

5. When I think of Toby Keith besides that song I think of a couple other
things. The statement of how Obama acted and talked 'white' to try to win.
and a reported backstage incident where the little smug righty got some comeuppance

To be fair Toby was not named in original Rolling Stone article but it wasn't hard to guess when the Star was called "one of country music's brightest stars (who shall remain nameless)" who'd had "a monster radio hit about bombing America's enemies back into the Stone Age."
To be fair Keith denies it ever happened, the other star smiles and says he doesn't recall, but his wife and the others there sure remember it. (Which the guy who laid it on Toby freely admits)

It was a concert in honor of Willie Nelson's 70th birthday.
As Toby (the Star) went by Kris Kristofferson, standing backstage with several others, he said ""None of that lefty shit out there tonight, Kris."

Oh, oh. Kris is a big lefty, true. He was also an Army Airborne Ranger, (even assigned to teach at West Point but he left the service instead), a boxer, a professional helicopter pilot so he is tough.
He was a Phi Beta Kappa and a Rhodes scholar so he's smart.
Toby was not smart. In response to toby's command of "None of that lefty shit out there tonight, Kris." he got this
What the fuck did you just say to me?" Kris growled , stepping forward.
(snip)

"You heard me," the Star said, walking away in the darkness.

"Don't turn your back to me, boy," Kristofferson shouted, not giving a shit that basically the entire music industry seemed to be flanking him.

The Star turned around: "I don't want any problems, Kris — I just want you to tone it down."

"You ever worn your country's uniform?" Kris asked rhetorically.

"What?"

"Don't 'What?' me, boy! You heard the question. You just don't like the answer." He paused just long enough to get a full chest of air. "I asked, 'Have you ever served your country?' The answer is, no, you have not. Have you ever killed another man? Huh? Have you ever taken another man's life and then cashed the check your country gave you for doing it? No, you have not. So shut the fuck up!" (snip) "You don't know what the hell you are talking about!"

"Whatever," the young Star muttered.

and that is what I think of. and I like it. I know 'boy' is often used as a demeaning term. and I liked it here.

As an aside Kristofferson had one of the greatest lines in response to a question of if he thought Reagan was evil (after he had just been tearing apart the policies of that administration).
He said "Ronald Reagan to me was just a hood ornament on the Mercedes. He had no creative input. He was just a mouthpiece."

11. "Whatever" in all it's forms is always the reply of the stupid and ill-informed person.
It's like when someone says "yawn" or something like that. It means they got nothing.

16. REAL country musicians
The few REAL country musicians seems to know what's going on. That's because guys like Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Steve Earle are proper, creative artists and not just populist jackasses playing music dumbasses wants to hear. Artists are sensitive people. Toby Keith is not an artist, he's just a musician.

23. As far as Toby and country music... There is a quote from Kris
in the article linked that says something pretty crude but probably true.
Think it was Toby Keith did to country music what pantyhose did to finger f-cking.

I get the feeling he is not a Toby fan and maybe didn't ask him for an autograph but on the record he speaks about him politely.

By the way he endorsed Obama...first time he has had real hope since the 60's. And as of last month he still really supports him.

On his website front page it says God bless Obama. God bless America. And God bless the others outside our borders.

But he still can't sing well. (He sure can write though)
