A third Question for 2010

If we govern in the middle, and truly reach out to repukes and conservadems and actually get some things. How many seats would we lose?

Not saying we should do that, but I am guessing we would lose very few seats. It is obviously a very heavy prices to pay on progressive legislation but until we get 65 or Senators and another 10 or 15 seats in the house. BlueDogs and RedDogs will hold tremendous power.

The midterms are going to be a referendum on the ability of the party of "Yes. we can" to actually get things done, far more than it is a ratification of the Party of No.

Personally... I want a permanent Democratic majority and would be willing to move incrementally to see that happen.

If we govern in the middle, and truly reach out to repukes and conservadems, what can we hope to actually get done? What actual progress can we hope to make if we are afraid to actually do anything?

It is my firm belief that if we actually had Democratic LEADERS enacting REAL POPULIST POLICIES,
you would see a major landslide for the Democratic party.

That is not what the Corporate Dems want.

5. I note that you use the word Populist rather than Progressive

By any commonly held definition Populism is an appeal to what is going to float the boats of the muddled middle, rather than what progressive might favor. A populist legislative agenda does win. (That's what made the Contract with America and effective political device..damnable content aside0. A populist agenda can push the repukes to the fringe, if they object and marginalized the messaging if they support it.

My position is that by enacting populist policies you are by definition enacting progressive policies.

Susan Collins effectively wrote the stimulus.

Joe Lieberman will effectively write HCR.

Since no pug, with the possible exception of the Maine ladies, will vote for anything at all in any scenario I honestly don't know how we could get more to the middle.

WDems have been punching bags. The argument that they are corporatist has never been enough because it makes us look like we hate businesses and arepro-governement. Our arguments, our voice, has never been resolutely acidic towards the GOP.

"The Mssaage" has never been What the Hell has the party of No done for you in the last 20 years?"

We get clobbered because The House is more liberal than the Senate, because Harry Reid does not come across as anything more than a pantiwaist. And the President has decided to let that process run its course/ He is not leading publicly on Healthcare.

I'm ok with your strategy so long as it isn't applied to a jobs bill. The jobs bill should be all Dem ideas -stuff we know works, no more compromises, so when the unemployment numbers are dropping, even if only modestly by next Fall, the people will be thanking Dems.
