White House signals compromise on tax cuts

(Reuters) - A conciliatory White House said on Thursday it was willing to negotiate with Republicans on tax cut extensions, but Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell took a hard line against compromises with President Barack Obama in a new Congress.

In the first possible policy shift since Democrats suffered heavy election losses two days ago, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs signaled Obama was open to talks on a temporary extension for the wealthy of Bush-era tax cuts that expire at the end of the year.

The fight over tax cuts looms as one of the biggest clashes since the election between Obama and Republicans, who will control the House of Representatives in the new Congress that convenes in January.

Obama invited top leaders from both parties to a meeting and a dinner at the White House on November 18, and he said the tax cuts will top the agenda.

</snip>

This is the last straw.

I'm just flabbergasted with these wimps.

Didn't you expect more?

I did. Wow. What a letdown.

For the record in case my post is deleted, I support Democratic values. The Obama administration does not, in my opinion.

Flame on.

1. I'm holding on until they want to extend the tax cuts.
If President Obama doesn't use his Veto Pen, then I'll have to give this a lot of consideration.

Don't get me wrong I'm pissed off to the max but, I'll give the President one more benefit of the doubt.

That's just me, you all do what you feel you need to do. You always do :P

9. I'm betting that's one they'll go after right away.
Trying to repeal Health Care will take more time.

They need to feed their base some red meat. The tax cut issue seems to be the one they'll go for. Not 100% sure - I can't think in batshit crazy terms but, I'm learning.

4. You failed to mention an important part of the article

"The president does not believe -- and I think would not accept -- permanently extending the upper-end tax cuts," Gibbs said.

So you took this out of context, just like reuters did. I'm sure that was just an oversight on your part. ;-)

7. Well, okay. The four-paragraph rule was just an oversight on my part. Right.
"The president does not believe -- and I think would not accept -- permanently extending the upper-end tax cuts," Gibbs said.

If Gibbs says it, it must be true.

Give me a break.

23. Temp. Extension is the real danger...
Edited on Fri Nov-05-10 12:20 AM by denimgirly
OBama has clearly left open the idea that temp extension for the rich is good with him. So all Repubs will do is make sure to pass a single bill that includes not only for the rich but the middle-class too so then Obama will be forced to sign. Democrats best strategy would be to separate the bills and then veto the upper-class one but democrats never have the guts to do so...so the only thing left is hopefully obama just vetos that single bill....that would be unfortunate because now repubs have a vice on him to use that he raised taxes on middle-class....seriously, they really should have dealt with this before repubs took control

Temp extension will keep it alive until 2012 where Repubs will use it against Obama still and will demand another extension or if they get control then they will make it permanent.

Kill it now or this will pretty much leave a giant whole on govern. revenue permanently.

But the sad truth is Obama just doesnt have the guts to fight republicans. IN all likelihood he will cave in and give them what they want....again.

30. Temporary extension is WORSE than permanent extension ...
... a temporary extension means they get to revisit the issue right before the presidential election. The GOP would love that and it would kill the Dems and Obama doesn't seem to have the ability to look 2 years down the road or this would not even be suggested.

12. If you "get that", then you wouldn't post your GBCW post just yet

Obama *HAS* to "sound" conciliatory right now, immediately following the election.

It gives him the high road when negotiations "break down".

McConnell has already seized the low road with his comments about his agenda being to one-term Obama.

20. We've been down that road many times...and Repubz now realize they can Get what they want..everytime
Repubz now realize obama can be manipulated to give them what they want pretty much on command so Obama acting once again open-to-talks just means he is willing to give the right what they want so he can say he has a win.

to the Republican wolves. Can't we ever have a fair fight? We can't even be grizzly bears now since Sarah Palin has cornered that market. Lions maybe? Just stop acting like prey and fight back.

What do they think is going to happen to them if they don't give the Republicans their way all the time? Is a street fight going to break out? Why aren't the Democrats fighting harder to expose the corruption and crime that's been going on in the government for decades? And why aren't they prosecuting?

It's little wonder nothing ever changes in Washington. Crime pays. And political crime pays a lot.

If the top tax rates don't increase before the end of President Obama's first term, I will not vote for his reelection. Instead I'll cast my presidential ballot for a lefty third party candidate.

27. Lessee...McConnell has declared war on Obama...
Gingrich is in DC. Rove is rambling around making trouble. DeLay will probably be cleared. Looks like most of the gang is intact or will be shortly.

Someone track Ken Starr and see what his plans are for the next couple of years.
