If you think this is the bottom, think again
In 2012 there will be 21 Democratic senators up for reelection, only 10 Republicans. Are we ready for president Rick Santorum and Republican control of both houses?

5. How can we prevent this?
It's not like we're up against people who will listen to reason. Christine O'Donnell, for example, got 40% of the vote. Thankfully, she lost, but 40% of the voters chose her. What does that say about those 40%? They are not people who can be reasoned with, and they are not people who care about facts.

I think the only answer is GOTV. But it has to be extremely effective GOTV. We need to get people fired up and active. We need to get young people and minorities registered and excited.

We can't beat them with reason. We can't beat them with money. We have to beat them with sheer numbers.

6. The Democrats HAVE to give people something to vote FOR, not just against some
vague rethug villain.

If the Dems had pushed real health care reform, real financial regulation, bailed out human America instead of corporate Amerika, fought for civil rights for all Americans, ended the god-damned wars against the Middle East, etc., etc., etc...

There would have been a tidal wave yesterday - in the opposite direction.

Even failing at those attempts, which they would have on most, I firmly believe that the GOP would be relegated to the dungheap of history.

By compromising/abandoning most of those objectives, the party brought on yesterday's result.

8. While I agree that they need to give people something to vote for
it's also true that there are reliable voting blocs. Getting minorities and youth to the polls can help tremendously regardless.

7. One thing the GOP does way better than us
is make noise. People are attracted to noise. Snake oil salesmen depend on that principle. Look at the late, great Billy May. The stuff he peddled was dreck, but he sold a lot of it. If we spend the next two years giving the Republicans legitimacy and never pushing back Obama will be a one-termer and somebody like Santorum or Haley Barbour will be our next president. The Presidency is the loudest megaphone in the world, but you got to use it. You can talk all you want about principle and policy, but if you're on the outside looking in all the great ideas in the world won't matter.

11. On the other hand, Alvin Greene also got 40% of the vote
Let's face it. The country is so split, any Republican or Democrat is pretty much guaranteed at least 40% of the vote, barring an unusually strong third party candidate.

9. But most of the Dems up for re-electiona are frrom 2008 Purple/Blue States
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 04:00 PM by pstokely
If the economy has improved enough, Obama being the ticket and higher turnout will help. MT and NEB will probably be Dem losses. Probably will pick up MA and MA from the Repukes, might be able to pickup NV. But it's 2 years away

10. Our best bet in Maine
is if some teabagger takes down Snowe. If she sees the writing on the wall, maybe she'll switch parties.
