Will Latinos vote en masse in Tuesday's midterm election or are they so disillusioned by unfulfilled promises and empty rhetoric they will simply stay home instead of exercising their right?

The question is relevant because, come Election Day, their votes could decide the outcome of several key races.

A recent national poll from the Pew Research Center found that a sizable majority of Latinos support the Democrats - also the case in New York - but they are unlikely to turn out in huge numbers on Tuesday.

However, despite the fact that midterm elections historically attract fewer voters than presidential contests, local community groups disagree with the Pew finding and cite a new poll supporting their contention.

Latino Decisions, a research firm, found that the level of enthusiasm among Hispanic voters has risen from 40% to 60% in the past month, which means that, like it or not, Latinos are poised to play a significant electoral role.

"Community organizations are working hard to make sure Latinos understand why this election is important to them," said Valeria Trevers, executive director of the New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE), a Jackson Heights-based, nonpartisan group.

6. They had a huge Latino registration project here in Arizona... I just HOPE and I will even pray that

they show up to vote. The outcome of our elections is in their hands.

Can't imagine a Latino/a voting for Tancredo here in Colorado.

Our school district election campaign is renting a bus to use for GOTV. One of our parents has been shaking every tree for support for our bond election here. We're so heavily Hispanic, and for years we haven't seen them actually turn out to vote. But this year we've registered hundreds at booths at every school function - over 90 events. I really hope they show up - and really for no other reason than they need to USE THEIR VOICE. They're getting terribly maligned here with Arizona's law, and Tancredo and Angle and all that racist bullshit. They need to stand up and be heard. We're all going to be depending on THEM.

14. As a Harlem New Yorker myself....if it's not GE---not too many Latinos.

For the GE they come out in massive numbers. Other elections don't really matter to them. Blacks come out for any vote at any time. Their numbers do tend to dwindle if it's not GE, but nothing like the Latino voters. I've noticed in the Harlem community with Blacks that voting to them is a privilege they do not take lightly; especially since it's one many of our forefathers/mothers died for. While the Hispanics are just apolitical until the GE---which they do believe matters. But I also think that's because there's not enough civics information out there for them to understand the role of the Governor, senators, representatives, and so forth.

15. I hope so. This election is critical.

There is a great deal of legislation and politicians swinging the pendulum on the future of this country. Many folks as possible must vote without fail.

I especially hope that folks of color will vote because we need to send a message that we will not be intimidated by voting disenfranchisement. We lend support to what insures quality representation in government if we participate.

I thank you for the story because it is empowering in the face of so much negativity this election season. We cannot afford to be demoralized. K and R.
