Louisiana Rep. Charlie Melancon, running short on time to overcome Republican Sen. David Vitter’s lead in the polls, is airing an unusual two-minute TV spot that attacks Vitter’s prostitution scandal in lurid detail.
The ad, an abridged version of a longer Melancon campaign film titled “Forgotten Crimes,” features the recorded account of a “former French Quarter prostitute,” who recalls an encounter with Vitter: “He went in, took a shower, spoke very little to me at first. The commercial shows several Louisiana voters, with their identities concealed, condemning Vitter as a criminal. “If you’re writing the laws, you should abide by the laws,” says one man identified as a retired firefighter. Another man, introduced as a retired school teacher, explains: “For me, it’s not about hookers or cheating on his wife. The man broke the law, and there ought to be consequences for that.”
A source familiar with the buy said the commercial will initially run largely on cable – possibly during the New Orleans Saints or LSU games this weekend. It is expected to reach every market in Louisiana
