Here's The Thing About Obama (And The Dems In General): They Actually TRY TO GOVERN
Edited on Mon Sep-20-10 09:28 PM by Beetwasher
As opposed to the Repubs who merely politic 24/7/365.

So when I hear the criticisms that the Dems "don't do politics" well or have problems "getting their message out", I remember this. They actually TRY to govern, which leaves them at a bit of a disadvantage to the Repubs who really don't give a shit about actually DOING work and devote ALL their efforts to constantly messaging. That's ALL they have and ALL they do. Governing actually takes time and resources, so the Dems devote FAR less time to politicking.

That's why we've been seeing these "timing" things over the last few cycles, where the Repubs seem to always control the narrative UP until a certain point. Then WHAMMO, things start to turn. The Dems are FINALLY putting the pressure on after actually doing the work. And the timing is right for that as this is when people start paying attention. And yes, they need to get better at working AND politicking, that's a valid criticism, but I still think they will always be at a bit of a disadvantage due to this. In addition to the Corporate Driven media narratives, of course.

1. FDR, HST, JFK, and LBJ could do both at the same time.

2. Add Obama and the Dems to that this. Remember that despite the shit that Pelosi has taken,
her House has been the most productive in the history of the Congress. What does she get for all of her good deeds? A "supposed" lost to Republicans. It is so sad. Very, very sad!!!

Obama has tried to reach out to Republicans because the public expected him to! There's always a double standard. Democrats are expected to be bipartisan. Republicans aren't.

What makes him different than the rest. All those presidents you mentioned--great as they were--they ALL compromised within their party. They all sought bipartisan and intra-party support.

5. Um, LBJ Did Not Run For A Second Term Due To Poor Support...
...Even though FDR is regarded as one of the best President's ever, the economy improved rapidly from 1933 to 1937, but then went into a deep recession, and right wing corporate interests plotted to over throw him as a socialist (sound familiar?). Harry Truman dreamed of comprehensive health care reform, but could not accomplish it, and JFK was unable to deliver on his promise of social security before he was assassinated. Against that list, and given the circumstances, President Obama holds up very well.
