Dems want GOP to list $700B in cuts to pay for high-end tax relief
By Michael O'Brien - 09/03/10 04:23 PM ET

Democrats pounced Friday on a top Republican's suggestion he knew of plenty of spending to cut in order to pay for the extension of high-end tax cuts.

If Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) thinks he can identify $700 billion in cuts to offset the costs of extending Bush tax cuts, Democrats said, he should specify where.

“If veterans are going to have to give up their benefits to pay for the Republican leadership’s tax breaks for the richest 2 percent of Americans, then they deserve to know that immediately," Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) spokesman Ryan Rudominer said.

The Democratic attack reflects the larger gambit over taxes both parties believe they face in the fall's elections. Republicans think running on an extension of all the tax cuts, which are set to expire at the end of the year barring congressional action, makes for good politics. Democrats, by contrast, believe running against the high-end tax breaks — and against the kind of steep cuts that Ryan's plan would involve — are just as good a message.

GOP leaders have largely avoided explaining how they would pay for extending the top-tier tax cuts as budget rules call for. Implicit in that maneuver is a desire by Republicans to have to pinpoint where they would have to make cuts, thereby giving Democrats a cudgel to use against them.

Ryan said that he doesn't believe in such sidestepping, however.

"Look, I'm not one of these people who says that all tax cuts pay for themselves, but tax rates on the margin is where growth occurs, and that does make a difference," he said this morning on CNBC.

1. What the f*ck does Ryan mean by 'tax rates on the margin is where growth occurs.'
That makes no sense whatsoever.

2. I'm glad you asked, because I have no clue either. I wonder if
he even knows what he's talking about.

6. Well, he is from Janesville, Wisconsin. And he does come from a long line of elitists.
And he was probably good buddies with former Governor Tommy Thompson the weasel.

5. He is talking about growth in
campaign contributions from rich people. That also means secure jobs for politicians that vote for it, keeping the unemployment rate(for them) down.

7. It is A Bald-faced Lie, Here Is The Graph That Puts The Lie On Ryan's Lips
Edited on Sat Sep-04-10 08:53 AM by mikekohr
-Why Does Republican Economic Policy ALWAYS Expand the National Debt?-
The answer is simple mathematics: "INCREASED SPENDING + decreased revenue ='s increased yearly deficits.

-scroll down to third graph-

The two biggest promises of "Trickle Down Economics" are it's greatest failings. Proponents of "Trickle Down Economics” claim that tax cuts, skewed to the rich, will create jobs and increase tax revenues. The graph above disproves the latter claim.

Job creation plummets under "Trickle Down Economics see http://bureaucountydems.blogspot.com/p/job ...

And nine of the last ten recessions have occurred under Republican leadership see http://bureaucountydems.blogspot.com/p/his ...

Two things are certain to grow when a Republican is in the White House, unemployment and the National Debt.

By contrast, "Bubble Up" economnic priciples practiced by Democratic Administrations put people to work, rev up the economy, and balance the Nation's ledger books. Every time. No exceptions.

10. The republicans call fiscal responsibility, 'Tax and Spend'
Paying for things as you go is called, 'tax and spend,' by the GOP. Fiscal responsibility is loathed by the right.

Given this fact, and the fact that republicans will never admit they are wrong, they will always rack up massive debt. Next time a republican wins the presidency they will completely, permanently, collapse the economy.

8. So what happens when the 'Pugs come up with those spending cuts,
Spending cuts that will be mostly in the domestic sector, that will effect the poor and middle class and make our lives even more miserable? Will the Dems extend the Bush tax cuts then?

This is a stupid pissing contest to get into with the GOP. They will have little problem coming up with such spending cuts, and thus be able to force the Dems into a corner.

The best tactic is to simply let the tax cuts expire.

9. Whoa whoa whoa...hold on now.
You don't get off that easy, Mr. Ryan--you want these tax cuts, then YOU find a way to pay for them. You're supposed to be the party of "deficit hawks" after all, right?
