TPM: Beau Biden Ahead of Republican Mike Castle in Delaware Senate Race
Poll: Beau Biden Ahead Of Mike Castle In Delaware Senate Race

Eric Kleefeld | November 16, 2009, 3:19PM

Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE) and state Atty. Gen. Beau Biden (D-DE)

A new Susquehanna (R) poll of the Delaware Senate race gives Democratic state Attorney General Beau Biden, a son of Vice President Joe Biden, a five-point lead over long-time GOP Congressman Mike Castle in the 2010 race for Joe Biden's former Senate seat.

The numbers: Beau 45%, Castle 40%, with a ±3.36% margin of error. Way back in April, the last time Susquehanna polled this race, they had Castle with a whopping lead of 55%-34%.

This is big news, considering that Castle has been in state politics for over 40 years and has never lost a race, and was seen as a moderate candidate whose entrance into the race gave a huge boost to the GOP.

The pollster's analysis says that this is the first public poll in which Beau Biden has been ahead, and suggests that Castle's current decline "may be a result of negative publicity he received in the state after casting a 'no; vote for President Obama's health care reform bill in the U.S. Congress. The current poll was conducted 11/10 - 11/15, the week immediately following the weekend when the U.S. House of Representatives voted on this landmark legislation."

1. Oh! This was that adorable (really) Republican Stephen Colbert just interviewed!
I kinda liked that guy, for a Republican. He had a great sense of humor and some very liberal stances, and didn't seem to mince words over them. He voted no on health care, so he's no Joseph Cao, but this Castle seems to be one of the old style Republicans, who were almost human.

3. Evidently, the voters of Delaware are not finding him quite so 'adorable.'

4. I about died when Colbert asked him about dating Florence Henderson...

...and asked if "the carpet matches the drapes?" Castle didn't understand what that meant, and it was hilarious.

7. You might also recognize him from the "birth certificate lady" video...

Delaware has a wingnut contingent, for sure, but our Republican politicians in general are not as crazy as they seem to be elsewhere - although Castle has been around a while. He was quite popular as governor.

He's a descendant of Ben Franklin, of all people, and doesn't fit in well with far right idiots.

5. Mike Castle does look a tad "over the hill" there. Biden has to be careful though.
He can't let it look as if he is beating up on Castle because of the age difference. He also has to avoid coming across as inexperienced. Then the youth works against him.

11. Castle made a possibly Fatal mistake by voting For the Stupak amendment
when he previously had an almost flawless pro-choice record and THEN voting against the Health Care bill anyway.
