Newsweek Poll: Republicans Think Obama 'Probably' Wants To Impose Islamic Law
Eric Kleefeld | August 31, 2010, 11:29AM

As Sam Stein has pointed out, a majority of Republicans suspect that President Obama wants to impose Islamic law, also known as Sharia, throughout the world, according to a new national poll from Newsweek. But even as they say this, a lot of them aren't completely sure.

The poll asked: "Some people have alleged that Barack Obama sympathizes with the goals of Islamic fundamentalists who want to impose Islamic law around the world. From what you know about Obama, what is your opinion of these allegations?"

The top-line result was definitely true 7%, probably true 24%, probably not true 36%, and definitely not true 25%. Among Republicans, however, it was definitely true 14%, probably true 38%, probably not true 33%, and definitely not true 7%.

snip//

It's interesting to note not only that a majority of Republicans believe Obama wants to impose Islamic law, but that a large portion of those respondents would only say it that such a severe accusation was "probably" true.

At a certain point, when it comes to questions like birtherism, Islam or any number of other outlandish accusations, you get the feeling that a lot of Republican respondents simply like to give the somewhat negative response about Obama just out of spite rather than serious belief.

4. Yet Rev Wright was an issue because Obama had been
going to the church and listening to his sermons for years.

Why would a Muslim go to church for years?

6. this is f***king insanity
Our rightwing media, and its conscious--or unwitting--allies in the MSM are promoting this insanity. If the repubs take Congress in November, we can kiss our country goodbye. I will do my part to encourage and assist people in voting. I am truly unhappy with the Democratic Party, but the alternative will destroy us.

8. every poll like this should be broken down into regions, then the South should be thrown out
It makes all the other regions seem like they are insane, as well.

13. Goddam, we had our chance to dump them in 1861.
But NOOOOOO! Lincoln had to go and mess up the best idea the South ever had.

because by now, the Confederacy would be worse off than Mexico in all likelihood.

17. I'm now living in trepidation, waiting for
all the flames to descend upon me for castigating and defaming that fine part of our nation. I fully know that not everyone who resides south of the Mason Dixon line is an ignorant blockhead, and that a goodly number of those living north of that line do fully qualify as IB's.

Nevertheless, the opportunity for a cheap shot at the expense of our southern countrymen (countrypersons?) was just too much for a weak-willed schlub like me to resist.

9. I just saw that on HuffPo
and my jaw dropped!! My mind just cannot get around things like this... I undestand not liking him, I understand thinking that he is wrong on everything and driving the country to he ground, etc. I do not agree but I understand that people can think that way. What I CANNOT understand is the level of credulity and downright stupidity reflected in such numbers. It's absolutely SCARY!

10. Was there ever a Newsweek poll asking if we thought Bush wanted to impose fascism?
Funny how the extreme stuff only gets asked about Obama...

23. Amen!!!
Bush was the Fascist, but because the right wing controls the media and its propoganda, this was never explored.

24. Of course not.
The media would have gone ballistic and indignant over the suggestion that they should even ask such a question. The double standard is disgusting.

12. How about asking
about what Palin or Beck want to impose on America. The GOP seems to be fine with a government edging ever closer to theocracy.

14. So can we infer from this that 7% of Republicans
are definitely sane, 33% are probably sane, 38% are probably insane and 14 % are batshit crazy?

18. I don't think there is anything wrong about Islam.
Even if we try and have more muslims in America, what is wrong with that? I know a lot of muslims and they are all great people. We need more muslims here, thats how i see it

20. Yes, many Muslims are great people.
And frankly, I would like the majority Christians to know they aren't the only game in town. But you will never get me to say that there is nothing wrong with any religion and especially any Abrahamic religion.
