Expectations are a b*tch - My toned-down (really) open letter to the President
Edited on Thu Jul-22-10 03:48 AM by countmyvote4real
Dear President Obama,

It has become apparent for some time that you are incapable or have no real intention of delivering the change you promised when I cast my vote for you to be our current POTUS. The Shirley Sherrod incident now makes it abundantly clear to me that the primary goal of your entire administration is to placate and appease the right wing noise machine at the expense of any meaningful progress while trashing the reputations of public servants that could actually make a difference.

It’s almost as if you think your political opposition voted for you in the first place and will be there again in 2012. Then so be it. I won’t. Once I’ve been thrown under the bus, I’m not going to vote to do it some more.

Also joining me under the bus (in no particular order):

A Public HC Option or Medicare for All
Fully restoring Glass-Steagall
Dawn Johnsen
War Crimes
Net Neutrality
EFCA/Card Check
MMS Reform
The Gulf of Mexico
Capping the Afghanistan Treasury Spill (Lives and $)
DADT
DOJ Attorneys Firings
Erroll Southers
Van Jones
Cap and Trade
Election Reform
My Vote

I’ve been told I should be grateful for half a loaf or a crumb here and there. No. I can no longer enable you, Mr. President. You are not Lindsay Lohan. Please, please, put down the RW Noise Machine Appeasement Pipe. It’s made you impotent. Good luck with that. You’re either serious or you’re not.

Untill then,
Ciao. (Eat Me)

39. Why would you reelect President Obama at this time?
I attempted to make my case in my OP. I haven't yet read one credible rebuttal to my arguments. It's mostly been about my word choices OR the blind faith of true believers that still see something good that I don't see anymore. WTF do you still see that I can't believe anymore? Has it become a cult thing? Help me out here if you can.

Edited on Thu Jul-22-10 11:38 PM by SunsetDreams
"Why would you reelect President Obama at this time?"

"I attempted to make my case in the OP" You haven't seen one credible rebuttal.
So in another words, this wasn't about sending an Open letter to Obama, but an attempt to get others to agree with you.

I'm still voting for him.

"Has it become a cult thing?" No it's called a supportive thing, for a Democratic President trying to get things done and wade through all the bullshit.

"Subtext for those that know" Kind of proves the point again, your more worried about what DU thinks, than what the President thinks about your "open letter" to him.

I'll reflect on that, for just a second.:eyes:

If you were interested in your "real change" you would have sent the letter directly to President Obama, instead of posting it on the internets. You sought agreement, plain and simple. From the looks of the thread below, it looks like you failed.

53. stop with the cult bullshit
Let me tell you what happened here. I replied to your OP, without throwing flames on it. Apparently you couldn't handle, my saying I would still vote for him, so you come back and question why I would still vote for him? Are you advocating that I stop supporting him?

Then you continue, throwing flames back. I never once questioned the content of your OP, just where it was delivered. If you did send a letter to Obama, what is the purpose of posting it here? I happen to have several things that I am disappointed with, but with the climate he has had to deal with, it doesn't take away my vote. He has made alot of accomplishements that are good. What we need is a bigger majority in Congress. I will vote Democratic period.

Now please, if you can respond rationally, I will reply back. If all you are interested in, is having a flamefest over my vote, then you will get silence.

other than my vote. It is possible for one to say, the President still has my vote, and yet be disappointed with some of the things that have happened. Those disappointments, do not outweigh the good. Things are not always black and white.

I don't need to be further informed, I am well aware of the accomplishments and things that could have been better. Now if you don't mind, I'm really tired of the flamefest over my vote. Part of your reply is rational, yet part of it is more backhanded flamefest.

4. A suggestion.
Some of the phrasings in your post are kind of slangy/jargony and might carry little meaning to an outsider. For example:
RW Noise Machine Appeasement Pipe'
under the bus
right wing noise machine
half a loaf or a crumb here and there

These phrases mean a lot in the discourse here on DU, but might not quite make sense to someone who doesn't spend time here. It could use explanation instead of keeping the shorthand.

18. Keith Olbermann used 'under the bus' on national TV last night
'Appeasement Pipe' is a clever turn of phrase, and not one I have ever seen before. The 'right wing noise machine' is again, a known phrase that conveys an exact and perfectly clear meaning, in this case, it is self descriptive, so a first time hearer would know exactly what it means.
None of these phrases are unique to DU, Appeasement Pipe might even be original, and it is fun. But on the other phrases, you are simply incorrect, they are all part of typical political discourse in this country, and are used by many who have never heard of DU.
In addition, the OP had a very specific addressee. Whom I think would understand the phrases as well as the rank and file would.

January 21, 2009, has come and gone! I can see why he didn't get it done by cloSe of day on January 20, ya know? He really was more interested in partying than clearing up every promise made during the campaign, but January 21 REALLY should have been enough time! All he has to do is issue the order, after all. And NOW, well golly gee, it has been a whole 18 months and it is still not done! It isn't like he has anything to do all day. Sheeshh!

campaign promises.

What are you going to say when 3 years have gone by and he still has yet to deliver on a single major campaign promise?

He's not going to go back and revisit HCR to get the PO.

The finance reform bill is basically a joke when it comes to actually regulating the core problems that caused the recession.

Yet, these are counted as achievements and have done nothing to address the core problems.

But hey, he's only been on the job for over a year and a half.

45. Couple of things here...
on some of these situations, progress has been made. That's how the political process works, in little groggy steps; the few times legislation is passed quickly, they are generally a disaster.

Priorities play a huge role in how things are dealt with as well.Would I cave in to the R's, no; but things rise up that were not expected, (think Gulf oil spill).

I'd like to see much of your list dealt with, but things like the Gulf disaster trump things like voting rights.

DADT should be history soon.

I think Cap and trade is a winner, but right now, we need to have alternatives that can replace what we have now.

With the mid-term not that far off, I figure some stuff will get done, mostly minor. After the mid-term, things should pick up

64. sums it up pretty well
& don't let the followers here get you down for seeing what they're too afraid to see. They, after all, make up the majority of every group. The people who catch on to things first are more in the leadership category, they've even got handbooks at Walmart teaching that it's best to get people like yourself fired, gotta nip it in the bud you know.

68. Sad but get used to it
It's true Mr. Obama has reneged on promises he made....ending wars...closing Gitmo...providing health care for Americans.... ending domestic police state...putting the interests of dispossessed Americans ahead of the interests of the rich bankers etc etc ..

But he has no choice and neither do the move makers in Democratic party, also known as DLC or corporate Democrats.

Why?

Because the Democrats have to support war(s) and the police state for money from the military and security complex. They have to make the "health care bill" into a subsidy for private insurance and Pharma if they want funding from the insurance companies and pharma. They have to screw us on CC bill, Financial reform bill, banker 120 million bonuses etc etc, if they want funding from the financial lobby. Sux huh?:(

I pretty much given up all hope our country can ever be a Democracy again. More like fascist oligopoly. To much money today and politicians who take it win starting in congress and governorships.

71. Oh you'll be there. It's just a matter of time.

If you aren't there for Obama (and he loses), you will be there 4 years later for an even a conservative Democrat (and will be jumping at the chance to help). People can only take so much self-inflicted political pain before they realize what is in their interests and what is not. What you call a "crumb" will quickly start to look like a 5-course gourmet meal, whether you like it or not.

76. Well Mr. President
I intend on giving you my full support, and even though we have made some small changes I would like to see bigger ones and I believe given a little more time some more can be done. We had ten years of every kind of distructive vice put in place to tear down the very fabric of our country,And I realize you are working with that disruction in congress. For those who are unhappy with the steps you have made tell them Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich wants their vote. God Bless America:rofl:
