Rachel Maddow: White House 'Inexplicably Keeps Falling For' Fox News Stunts (VIDEO)

Rachel Maddow went after Fox News Tuesday night for its role in propagating the Shirley Sherrod story, but she also criticized the White House for continuing to fall for the network's stunts.

After showing repeated instance of Fox News anchors pushing the idea that Sherrod was a racist based on an out-of-context excerpt of a speech she gave to the NAACP earlier this year, Maddow laid into the network.

"This is what Fox News does, this is how they are different from other news organizations," Maddow said. "This is why the White House argued months ago that Fox should be treated as a media organization but not as a normal news organization, because they don't treat news the way a normal news organization treats news. Just like the fake ACORN controversy, Fox News knows that it has a role in this dance....

"Fox does what Fox does, that is dog bites man, that is not interesting. What is interesting about this story is that the Obama administration inexplicably keeps falling for it."

3. Why are some pundits so sure the WH wanted her fired?
Without any evidence. If we want the truth we should tell the truth. There is no evidence the WH asked her to be fired.

The real issue is why do we fall for the rightwing bullshit all the time?
ACORN, Van Jones, Sherrod, and whoever else follows them, only happens because we empower the rightwing to dictate our actions.

12. Not the issue.

The point is that Vilsack had her canned without checking for a second to see if there was any veracity to the story, which was propogated by a known serial liar and propagandist. The NAACP lept into the shit, justifying her ouster, and the White House signed off on it after the fact.

Dumb. Fucking careless, period.

16. What you say is true
but what you didn't include was the insinuation that the WH wanted her fired.

This is what I am hearing from pundits without any shred of evidence.

So the story will be that Obama and the NAACP threw Sherrod under the bus without checking the facts. There will be very little discussion of the dirty tactics and lies used by Fox News and Breitbart.

20. All I've heard is the very opposite of that...
...that, being Vilsack and Gibson denying the White House had applied any pressure whatsoever to have her fired. Who is purporting otherwise, besides (I'm sure) Fox, Breitbart, Red State, Freepers or their ilk?

14. nobody is asking for perfection..
that's a red herring. we're asking for competance. we're asking that the admin and their cabinet just take a damn minute to sort things out before jumping to conclusions based on the word of a known liar.

27. Instead they're asking for competence that's too close to perfection to distinguish.
How is that helpful?

11. Is there an ironclad guarantee the White House won't fall again for this kind of shit?
How many others will follow the likes of ACORN, Van Jones, and Sherrod before we get tired of Lucy pulling the football at the last second?

18. The White House? Really?
Edited on Wed Jul-21-10 05:45 PM by SunsetDreams
I think your aim should be at Vilsack.
The White House has said they were not involved, Vilsack has said he acted alone in the decision.
There is a difference between saying White House, and Administration.

22. Link please?
Shirley Sherrod herself said the "request" for her resignation came from the White House.

When did Vilsack say he acted alone? When did the White House deny they were involved? If so, why is the White House apologizing?

23. oh my goodness, did you not see the press conference?
Edited on Wed Jul-21-10 06:31 PM by SunsetDreams
Shirley said that someone told her that, I watched that interview, and her repeat one today. That is hearsay.
Shirley Sherrod had no contact with the White House.

Vilsack, said in the press conference he acted alone. The buck stopped with him. He had apologized by phone, and was apologizing in public, to Sherrod.

The White House, denied they were involved today.
I thought the reason the White House is apologizing would be clear. Obamas Appointee did this. If the White House did not extend an apology, some would be all over that.

Vilsack's lying, covering for his superiors, the usual. He's a corporate shill, I would expect no less from him.

30. How ironic that this is posted on Huffington Post
considering Huffington Post ran full steam ahead with the story from Fox! I wonder if Rachael will do a story on how Huffington Post "'Inexplicably Keeps Falling For' Fox News Stunts?" I wonder if Huffington Post will do a story on ITSELF and how IT "'Inexplicably Keeps Falling For' Fox News Stunts?
