The real skinny on Shirley Sherrod
Witch hunt by Breitbart? Would anyone be surprised?

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2010_07/024811.php

MEET SHIRLEY SHERROD.... It looked like Breitbart and the Big Government website had gotten the goods on another one of their enemies. But as is often the case, there's more to this one than meets the eye.

The story involves USDA official Shirley Sherrod, the director of regional development in Georgia. She spoke recently at an NAACP event, and Big Government posted a portion of her remarks. As far as the far-right site is concerned, Sherrod "admitted" that she's used her "federally appointed position" to "discriminate against people due to their race."

At first blush, the allegations almost seem fair. The video shows Sherrod talking about a deliberate decision not to help a white farmer because she was "struggling with the fact that so many black people had lost their farm land."

Obviously, we can't have administration officials engaged in this kind of behavior, so Sherrod was forced to resign -- a decision initially endorsed by the NAACP, which called Sherrod's remarks "shameful."*

You can probably tell there's a "but" coming. In this case, the conservative Big Government site showed the part of the speech it wanted people to see, and Fox News to air.

Jay Bookman notes today that there's relevant information and context Breitbart's project didn't offer.

...Sherrod said what online viewers weren't told in reports posted throughout the day Monday was that the tale she told at the banquet happened 24 years ago -- before she got the USDA job -- when she worked with the Georgia field office for the Federation of Southern Cooperative/Land Assistance Fund.

Sherrod said the short video clip excluded the breadth of the story about how she eventually worked with the man over a two-year period to help ward off foreclosure of his farm, and how she eventually became friends with the farmer and his wife.

"And I went on to work with many more white farmers," she said. "The story helped me realize that race is not the issue, it's about the people who have and the people who don't.
When I speak to groups, I try to speak about getting beyond the issue of race."

In fact, as it turns out, Sherrod worked so hard to help that white farmer and his family they consider her a "friend for life."

Somehow, this didn't make the cut in the Big Government clip. The far-right site has the entire video, but only released the part that served the right's purposes.

And in this case, the right's purposes are trying to spur racial animosity, taking the remarks of an African-American American official to the NAACP and removing the context, all in the hopes of generating white resentment.

The anti-ACORN crusade -- and its creative editing -- should have been the first clue that right-wing video clips released by Breitbart and Big Government may not be what they seem to be. Shirley Sherrod offers another painful reminder.

* Update: Today, the NAACP walked back yesterday's criticism, and is reportedly investigating the matter.

5. That's what wonders me...
You'd think with their record of bald-face lying 'creative editing' that ANYTHING coming from Breitbart would automatically be suspect, wouldn't you?
:eyes:
It's not as though they haven't done this and gotten busted for it before.

11. That's what flabbergasts me most of all about this...
Why the NAACP/Dem callers demanding she resign paid ANY attention to this given it was Brietbart smearing her is beyond me. She is due, imo, a raft of apologies and a sincere and strong offer of her old job back or a better one.

without regard for truth, while maintaining a so called distance.

Yes, I do hope the victim in this case is offered her job back after review of the unedited video. What she did was courageous, not racist. She examined her motives/beliefs and made a change in her previously deep rooted thought process. She helped a desperate family in spite of preconceived notions and grew as a human being in the process. Since when is that shameful?

23. Well said! She is a person to be admired, imo...
she openly talked about how she went from 'there', looking at the issue from a 'black and white' perspective, to 'here', understanding that being in need of help is NOT a race issue, and worked very hard to help the family save their farm and they, working together, were successful.

Reciting her own experience as an example of how one can grow beyond their initial narrow perspective is a great example of what President Obama spoke about when he addressed the issue of race during the campaign, imo.

You know how you know you've really screwed up?

July 20, 2010 2:52 pm ET by Simon Maloy

When you're a right-winger launching race-based attacks and even Erick "More Willie Hortons" Erickson thinks you've gone too far.

But such things happen when you make unfounded accusations of racism against government employees based on heavily edited snippets of video.

Seems like Andrew Breitbart is going to have a lot of explaining to do...

20. And Vilsack takes the rap:
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0710/Official_No_White_House_pressure_on_Sherrod.html?showall

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack this afternoon took responsibility for firing an official, Shirley Sherrod, whose appearance on video recalling her behavior toward a white farmer drew charges of racism, and whose immediate firing drew suggestions that the administration had over-reacted to an edited video clip.

A White House official told me just now that the White House backs Vilsack's decision -- but that it was Vilsack's alone. The official said the White House -- contrary to the Sherrod's charge -- did not pressure the Department to fire her.

http://www.ajc.com/news/usda-reconsiders-firing-of-574027.html

....Vilsack said in a statement early Wednesday morning that he will "conduct a thorough review and consider additional facts" about his decision to ask Shirley Sherrod to resign....

I think the word "additional" doesn't really belong in this sentence.

28. And here's the fumble!
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0710/In_meeting_Messina_praised_Sherrod_handling.html

But three Democratic sources said deputy chief of staff Jim Messina singled out the White House's initial response to the incident for praise in the regular 8:30 a.m. staff meeting Tuesday morning. The sources differed on the substance of Messina's praise, but concurred that he had praised the speed of White House communications in response to the flap, which was driven by a misleadingly edited video posted to Andrew Breitbart's Big Government website.

One source, who is unhappy with the administration's handling of the incident, paraphrased Messina's remarks: "We could have waited all day — we could have had a media circus — but we took decisive action, and it’s a good example of how to respond in this atmosphere."

Mixed signals.

Yeah, because when considering whether or not to ask a hard-working, well-liked, long-serving federal employee who is currently traveling to pull the car over and resign immediately by BlackBerry, I want speed and concern over the cable news cycle to be the FIRST consideration--not the employee's rights.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/07/22/agriculture.employee.usda/index.html?hpt=T1

During the seven-minute conversation, "The president told Ms. Sherrod that this misfortune can present an opportunity for her to continue her hard work on behalf of those in need, and he hopes that she will do so," the White House said in a statement about the phone conversation.

Obama "expressed to Ms. Sherrod his regret about the events of the last several days," the statement said.

"She's feeling pretty good after talking to him," O'Neill said.

Earlier Thursday, Sherrod said she was "not so sure" about the new job offer.

I think Shirley can stand up for herself, using a story of her "coming of age" in defeating her own personal goblins of racism.

Again, all the media, and the White House itself were suckers who "bought the farm" on this story.

Disgusting dishonest media, disgusting judgment from the White House and Ag Secretary before all the facts are in.

No wonder our nation is such a mess when we are led around by the likes of Andrew Breitbart.
