How Can Obama Rebound?
Though BP managed to stop the spread of oil from its broken well last week, President Obama has been able to do little to stop the drop in his public approval ratings, which now, according to a new ABC News-Washington Post poll, hover just above 40 percent. Add these numbers to the comment by Robert Gibbs, the president’s press secretary, that Democrats could lose control of the House in the November elections, and it equals trouble for the president in 2012. So what does Mr. Obama need to do to shore up his base, woo back independent voters and win a second term? The Op-Ed editors asked political experts to suggest a few plans of attack.

Legislation Can’t Save You

Politicians believe in magic. They are always searching for the incantation or the mystic strategy that will connect them to voters. But Americans want one thing from their elected officials and especially their presidents: success.

President Obama has certainly pushed through some landmark legislation. But the success voters want is tallied not by laws passed, but by wars won and prosperity enhanced. Who passed more important laws than Lyndon Johnson? And look what happened to him.

President Obama has placed big bets on the board: the $787 billion stimulus plan to generate employment, the Afghan surge to fight the Taliban, a bailout fund to cushion the financial crisis, diplomacy to stop the Iranian bomb. These are actions of historic scale; if they fail no spin doctor can explain them away.

1. He could become white, that might help.
Or if the (mostly racist) South seceded he would have an 80% approval.

Edited on Mon Jul-19-10 11:40 AM by CakeGrrl
Why do people continue to suck down MSM spin and get worked up over it?

On the other hand, why do people wonder why the Obama administration hasn't gotten enough of a message out, while we have no problem hearing about idiot Palin's ramblings?

5. He's a guard not a forward
Guards don't need to rebound. I'm dubious that the NYT can make a case that Obama needs to either. The whole article seems to be a textbook case of "begging the question". i.e. establish that Obama NEEDS to rebound first. His numbers aren't stellar, but they aren't that bad either. Re-election is 2+ years away.

9. Go sit down on the bench, please.
If you're wearing my team's uniform, you're going to rebound. And you're going to play defense, and when you're not open and your teammate is open, you pass the ball. Everyone rebounds. Michael Jordan got over six rebounds a game for his career, and one year averaged EIGHT. Kobe Bryant averaged six per game last year, and his fellow guard Derek Fisher averaged two and a half.

Yes, forwards get more rebounds than guards. That's a function of their position on the court, nearer the basket. But guards rebound, and guards who think they don't NEED to rebound get sent to the bench. Posthaste.

And Mr. Obama's game is just fine, thanks. I wouldn't worry.

21. A corporate owned media, combined with electronic voting machines...both spell problems.
Why can't President Obama just openly take on the corporate masters? Is it because they have their minions in Congress and until that changes, there isn't much to hope for?

They are the ones fueling the republican lies.

7. He doesn't NEED to rebound!
Two years from now, regardless of his opponent, he gets at least 285 EVs.

two years more of economic stagnation and who knows... could be that even a nutter from team B looks better to a majority in key electoral states.

15. actually current data indicates that Obama's recovery is starting about a year earlier than
Reagan's recovery did under his presidency and in two years Obama could be as unbeatable as Reagan turned out to be.

14. Time will help. If the recovery is sustained eventually jobs will begin to grow
and that more than anything will boost Obama and democrats. Already Obama is in better shape than Reagan or Clinton at similar periods. As conditions get better so will his poll numbers.
