New national poll: Gingrich leads GOP pack for '12
Gingrich leads

Our monthly look at who GOP voters prefer as their 2012 nominee finds that Sarah Palin is the most popular potential Republican hopeful with the base...but that she finishes just fourth when it comes to who they want as their nominee. For the first time Newt Gingrich is the leader in this poll with 23%, followed by Mike Huckabee at 21%, Mitt Romney at 19%, Palin at 17%, and Ron Paul at 7%.

70% of Republicans have a favorable opinion of Palin, putting her tops. That's followed by Huckabee at 64%, Gingrich at 63%, and Romney at 59%. But only 24% of the GOP loyalists who like Palin list her as their top choice for the 2012 nomination. Gingrich is ahead even though he's not as popular because 34% with a positive opinion name him as their top choice for the nomination. That figure is 31% for Romney and 28% for Huckabee. There is a significant disconnect between liking Palin and thinking she should be President, and that's one of the biggest things she'll have to overcome if she does end up getting into the race.

Angry white men were credited for making Gingrich Speaker of the House in 1994 and they're propelling him to the lead in this poll. He gets 26% from them with Romney at 20% and Huckabee and Palin both at 17%. Huckabee has the advantage with women at 26% to 19% for Gingrich, 18% for Romney, and 17% for Palin.

The big picture on this poll is the same as it is every month: the leading GOP contenders are closely bunched with no clear frontrunner.

2. If Gingrich Is The Repub 2012 Nominee
That would mean that Obama would have faced, Alan Keyes, John McCain, and Newt Gingrich in elections for higher office.

The Harlem Globetrotters faced tougher competition.

Angry white men do not vagina monologue.
They appear to prefer to elect someone with their own shortcomings.
I'll guess we will have to see how Gingrich measures up to other angry old white alpha males.

18. If the GOP feels that he is the best person to run...
they will create a narrative of his simple faith and not that Jesus forives so how dare anyone question gods forgiving grace.

This is about power. And conservatives will forgive him of any of his foibles, becasue politics often works like a religion, and is a matter of belief. That is why many people do not change their mind no matter what the facts. They are tre believers.

13. They still have nobody. Keep propelling the bottom of the
barrel to the forefront and they will end up with Palin, who while she may be liked, most people recognize she is not a leader.

14. And Gallup has Palin in the lead.
Palin's 76% Favorable Among Republicans Tops Others in GOP
Former Alaska governor's image more mixed among all Americans
by Frank Newport

PRINCETON, NJ -- Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is the best known and most positively rated of five possible contenders for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. Her 76% favorable rating among Republicans is higher than those for Mike Huckabee, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, and Bobby Jindal.

At this point who the hell knows. It is way too early to know who the Repubs will pick which is why these polls all say something different.

That Gallup poll is NOT a GOP voter preference poll. It is a favorability poll ONLY. Interesting how Gallup presents a misleading poll like that isn't it? PPP has Palin with the highest favorables as well but she does NOT lead their preference poll.

17. Absolutely terrifying numbers
Edited on Fri Jul-16-10 01:30 PM by Politics_Guy25
Her national all voter favorables are 44-47. That's not half bad and puts her well within reach of the presidency if she's the nominee. I may need to reassess wanting her to be the nominee. I thought she was universally despised. That Gallup figure shows that she's not. My worst fear is that the parallels between the late 70's Reagan and 2010 Palin are striking.

25. Newt will run, but not with the idea of becoming President.. He will be Veep
He will run with the idea of being "Cheney" to Sarah Palin's "Dubya." Newt will craft the ideological tone for the campaign, and do an infinitely better job of scripting talking points than Steve Schmidt did.
