7. I think Olbermann fumbled this one

On Countdown last night, he teased this latest Limbaugh atrocity by implying that the target of Limbaugh was more "sacrosanct" than the first black president.

I was fully expecting to hear that Limbaugh had defamed MLK. It turned out that Olbermann's outrage was in defense of, for fuck's sake, Oprah Fucking Winfrey. :shrug:

He made it to sound that the shameless self-promoter, and continual promoter of silly hacks, and silly self-help books and frauds was even more important than the first black president, or even than Martin Luther King himself.

What the fuck? I give Winfrey props for making a hell of a magnate out of herself. But to say that she is more important than the first African-American president of the USA was just puzzling. She's made billions of dollars. And she's given some money to charity. But the reverence he showed to her is just, well, weird.

Maybe Keith had not fully metabolized all of his holiday weekend cocktails.

He said she was probably better known, even more of an iconic figure to many people, than Obama. And he's probably right about that. After all, Obama can largely said to have been elected in part with her help. When she backed him, it surely persuaded many of her fans that he was the real deal.

Olbermann doesn't always describe the world the way he THINKS it should be, but the way it IS. And he acknowledges that whether or not he's personally an Oprah fan, she is a megastar--a HUGE one--probably more of a black megastar than Obama simply because of how long she's been one.

Edited to add: He also acknowledges that she got where she is today through hard work, not through any sort of secret affirmative action program for black superstars.

Limbaugh gets paid the money that he gets paid not because of his ratings which are not that large. He gets paid because he deflects attention away from his corporate masters. He exists to give White working and middle class males, and some females, a reason for their struggle OTHER than their corporate overlords who are the ones making their lives miserable.

So, instead of telling them the truth that their wages are stagnant because folks at the top take more for themselves, he tells them that Black people are getting rich because of White guilt. He gives them a scapegoat.
