The Great Obama BP Jones Act Myth.
Edited on Tue Jun-29-10 10:13 PM by Clio the Leo
Posting this because it's becoming the wingnuts newest BS talking point .... that there are Dutch ships able to clean large spills ready and waiting that the President isn't using because ... get this ... he doesn't want to make the Unions mad. (too late!) You know the Obama White House .... scared of unions and all.

So I'm posting this to make you informed citizens capable of winning any Facebook/office water cooler argument.

Main points ... .the Jones act only applies to waters three miles off the coast, so it doesn't apply anyway .... the government is using EVERY resource offered free of charge by international entities .... we're NOT using the Dutch because they dont know how to clean LARGE spills .... like the Norwegians do ... who's help we are using.

Agitprop Alert: The Jones Act and the Oil Spill
JUN 29 2010, 1:55 PM ET

The agitprop: "Why is Obama letting his cozy relationship with labor unions keep the Dutch from sending oil skimmers to the Gulf? You know that he hasn't waived the Jones Act. During Katrina, President Bush waived the act immediately."

What it means: The Dutch know how to cap oil spills, but Obama refuses to let them help because organized labor would be mad at him. The law prohibiting foreign ships from operating off American soil can be waived, but Obama refuses to do so because he's in thrall to the labor unions.

The media: The assertion has been debunked yet is still alive, ubiquitous on Fox News and GOP radio and present in an exchange on Meet the Press this weekend.

The truth: Not a single government that has offered its assets for free has been refused by the U.S. ... The government, on Obama's orders, is moving to quickly streamline the complicated procedures for waiving the Jones Act, which only applies to ships within three miles off the coast. The Coast Guard says that no one has asked them to waive the Jones Act yet. ... Most of the containment and assistance offers wouldn't apply, because ships would be well outside the three-mile threshold, or because they fall into a category of ships with a specific purpose, like oil skimmers. They're already exempt.

So where are the Dutch ships, the Norwegian ships, the Belgian ships? For one thing, we're using Norweigian skimmers. The Dutch have experience with much smaller spills, and their expertise isn't as pertinent. For another, Dutch engineers ARE consulting with the U.S. government. Finally, it's worth noting that many foreign offers of help have been conditional -- that is: "We'll sell you these supplies at this cost." Mexico has offered assistance for free, and the U.S is using it. 15 foreign countries have signed reciprocity agreements with the U.S. and are helping with the clean-up effort.

3. well .... you know we both have to thank the awesome Mark Ambinder....
..... technically, the WH (via the fightthesmears.org website) has refuted that ... but they're losing the message war on this one.

(lol, wonder if I can find a button on my new Obama iphone ap to point this out to them ha)

4. I have to laugh. This reminds me of the imaginary fleet of supertanker vacuums. Then
only one-of-its-kind A Whale showed up.

5. Forward this to the biggest ones pushing these falsehoods: AC 360
Cooper is standing down there projecting all that faux sympathy with James Carville foaming at the mouth while having his insanity on the air every night.
These two have been pushing these fake stories for two months.

Not to mention the sheer snide attitude of Tweety towards this administration lately and pushing the same lies, just because for some reason he woke up one morning hating Obama

7. Lots of myths out there concerning the President..
Too many can't deal with the facts so they rely on making it up as fast as they can.

9. I find the imaginations of some the President's detractors amazing
Some of the stuff they come up with is truly inspired. These folks really should be writing children's novels.

8. Allow me to 'splain. No time! Let me sum up.
Q. Why hasn't Obama or the Dems waived the Jones Act?

A. Because no one has needed it to be waived.
