Two weeks after losing Alabama’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, Rep. Artur Davis expressed doubt over nominee Ron Sparks’s ability to win the seat in November.
In a brief interview with POLITICO Thursday off the floor of the House, Davis said Sparks faced an uphill battle against whomever Republicans nominate in the July 13 runoff, arguing that the state agriculture commissioner relied too much on a plan to use a state lottery and a gambling tax to help solve the state’s economic woes.
“I think it’s going to be challenging for Sparks to win. He certainly could win, but the reality is voters, in Alabama want a message broader than bingo,” Davis said.
“Now, in a Democratic primary universe, that may have been a different story, but once you are outside the primary universe I think he’s going to have to broaden his message. He’s going to have to reach a group of voters that he and I weren’t encountering in the Democratic primary.”
