Relief well for Gulf spill may take 90 days-Salazar

WASHINGTON, May 2 (Reuters) - U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar on Sunday said it could be 90 days before a relief well is completed to address the Gulf oil spill.

"You're looking at potentially 90 days before you ultimately get to what is the ultimate solution here and that's a relief well," Salazar said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

So today we’re announcing the expansion of offshore oil and gas exploration, but in ways that balance the need to harness domestic energy resources and the need to protect America’s natural resources. Under the leadership of Secretary Salazar, we’ll employ new technologies that reduce the impact of oil exploration. We’ll protect areas that are vital to tourism, the environment, and our national security. And we’ll be guided not by political ideology, but by scientific evidence.

That's why my administration will consider potential areas for development in the mid and south Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico, while studying and protecting sensitive areas in the Arctic. That’s why we’ll continue to support development of leased areas off the North Slope of Alaska, while protecting Alaska’s Bristol Bay.

2. Coming Next: Six or Seven Safe, Clean Nuclear Plants
President Obama has followed up on his support for "a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants," laid out Jan. 27 in his State of the Union speech, by proposing to triple public financing for nuclear power.

The Department of Energy recently proposed $36 billion in new federal loan guarantees on top of $18.5 billion already budgeted – for a total of $54.5 billion. That's enough to help fund six or seven new power plants.

3. Considering most of France is powered by them, I think it's a good alternative to oil drilling. n/t

10. I drive a Prius, and you?
Time to move to green technologies, not to expanding failed ones like offshore drilling and nuclear.

11. I don't own a car. And the Prius needs gasoline from the Middle East to go more than 30 mph...

... so you'd better stop driving. All the bellyaching about oil drilling is hypocritical when you drive a car that you regularly fill up at the nearest gas station.

President Obama has invested more in "green technologies" than any executive in U.S. history but those seeds of investment will take decades to come to full fruition. Unless you can suggest a "green" way to sufficiently power all of America's energy needs now and in the near future, nuclear plants are the best alternative to imported oil until "green technologies" can take over in a credible fashion.

5. France Doesn't Turn Operation of Everything To the Lowest Crooked Bidder
Edited on Sun May-02-10 09:36 AM by MannyGoldstein
France supports good jobs at good wages, and thus can have sufficient competent technical and maintenance staff to ensure safety.

Here in the US, we give a contract to some schnook who hires temporary design staff (probably from a sketchy outfit overseas) at the lowest wages than fires them once design is somewhat complete, then hires illegals at $5 an hour to maintain the thing. Said schnook then puts 30% of the revenue in a hidden, untaxable offshore bank account. Finally, when the plant melts down requiring a colosal cleanup, said schnook has his company declared bankrupt and moves to the French Riviera, leaving you and me to pay the bill.
