McCain: Lowest Tax Rates in Decades Are Crippling the Country
By Mike Lillis 4/15/10 2:22 PM

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) took to the Senate floor today to decry the crippling effect of federal income taxes on families and the economy.

“While we continue to spend and spend and spend here in Washington,” he said, “the tax burden carried by the average American gets heavier and heavier and heavier.”

He must not have seen the this new study from the Tax Policy Center, a joint project of the nonpartisan Urban Institute and Brookings Institution. Crunching numbers from the Congressional Budget Office, another nonpartisan group, analysts there found that the median middle-class family of four will owe just 4.6 percent in federal income tax today — about half of what they owed in Ronald Reagan’s lowest tax year.

Much of the reason, as the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities notes, is the generous tax break offered in the Democrats’ stimulus bill, passed a year ago.

Don’t try to convince McCain. Our tax-paying ritual, he said, “is a painful, complicated and uniquely American exercise.” As if the Belgians are taking home everything.

1. Well, my taxes went down ...

I was not looking forward to doing them 'cause my income went up last year, and I have no special exemptions or credits. I wasn't looking forward to writing that check.

Turned out my total tax burden was *lower* than it was the previous year.

The check I wrote was for $1.

11. Wow! So you were pleasantly surprised!
My sister got back $3,000 and last year they paid $800..

The mainstream who got back taxes need to hear mccain whine about it.

12. Quite surprised ...

I structure my withholding so that I tend to have to pay somewhere between $50 and $100. (I don't give the government interest-free loans.) However, last year my withholding was reduced due to some Obama policy, and unfortunately I got lazy about it and had not bothered to look to see what this was going to do to my year-end taxes. I did some rough calculations and realized I'd paid in about $800 less over the year but had received around $4K more in compensation. So, I thought I was gonna have to write out a really big check.

And I can't really afford to write a really big check right now considering I'm no longer employed (by choice) and am living off savings while getting some personal crap worked out.

When I finally figured it all and saw that "You Owe $1" staring at me, I felt like I'd won a lottery. I did it all again from scratch just to make sure I hadn't screwed up somewhere.

5. Taxes are "crippling" to HIM since he and his wife are multi-millionaires.
He doesn't even know how many homes he owns. When the "regular" people see their tax returns, McCain will lose even more credibility.

18. McCain supported Bush's unfunded programs-like the wars- wants
the war in Iraq to run for another 100 years if "necessary", wants to cut taxes (to the rich)and decides now that not only are taxes too low on the middle class, but that the US is the only country that pays taxes to their central government...

John, go sit in your rocking chair, watch the clouds go by, have a little iced tea (Decaf) and retire.
You are a senile old fuck.

mark
