122. yes, the end of shrubs surge did draw the troop count down in Iraq
Maybe one day Obama will keep his promise and actually reduce troop counts in Iraq like dim son did.

Now I'm in no way a fan of shrub, or a hater of Obama, but so far the troop with drawls in Iraq have been from the shrub admin, not Obama's.

2. It's a lift when a President visits soldiers when they're on foreign soil.
The evidence also suggests that this particular president represents about as big a presidential lift as it gets. It looks to me from the pictures that these people are damned pleased to see this president and to have him visit them in such a faraway place.

Great photos, Jackeens.

68. Obama is a good man and people pick that up about him.
Hes bringing a lot to the table. A very sharp mind and a genuinely good heart.

It's going to be very difficult for any of the potential GOP 2012 prez candidates to claim that turf on those terms.

I never went to Fayetteville much after the first time, although I did buy an old shotgun in one of the pawnshops...for about $75 more than I would have paid for it back home.

I still have dreams about being in the army, and I have been out for almost 40 years....
Think they have had much of an effect?

103. Does Rush still get broadcast to our troops there?
A few years ago, when W was in office, the Ed Schultz radio show was going to be aired to the overseas troops for some balance to Limpballs, but that didn't go through, and the troops were stuck with hearing only Rush's distortions and lies.
Thank you for such great pictures! Genuine smiles and not a plastic turkey in sight!!

124. Cheney and Rummie spent a great deal of time
removing generals who were not with the program, and promoting those who were. The key people who make things happen, especially determining how policy is followed, the majors, the colonels, and the junior generals, these guys are bible beating, republican supporting, neocons (even if most of the military is not).

remember the efforts the military used to prevent any further reports of torture by the CIA or the military? That is simply one facet.

11. If I was in the military, the president I'd hate
would be the one who sent me and my buddies of to kill or be killed for no good reason. There have been several of those in my lifetime, including LBJ and Nixon--but the most recent truly egregious offender was George W. Bush, who never did manage to actually articulate his reasons for getting all those people killed and wounded in Iraq, at least in public.

14. It just really works that a Democratic President has such ease with the
men and women in the armed forces. It really works that he drops in unannounced of course, and by all appearances is as glad to see the soldiers as they are to see him.

I look over the soldiers' faces in these photos and read them as an abiding earnestness. It matters to them that he has come to speak to them. It matters to Obama that they are serving far from home in a dangerous place.

In the photo with Obama's foot up on the white rail, there's an engagement of spirit. Small 's' but very strong, it seems to me. The one soldier standing and clapping strikes me as a very authentic response. Is he supposed to be demure and official or is he allowed to express his appreciation and respect? I don't know. But he's clapping, and I can almost hear it.

Obama must have been possessed of the same ability to engage when he worked as a community organizer right out of college. Right after college, with his creds he could have waltzed into a big corporate law firm but instead returned to greater Chicago to work the neighborhoods, to build community.

31. Of the 22 years in which I wore in an USAF uniform, I served under a Democratic CiC for 8 of them
And during that time, the US military experience its best reputation at home and abroad much more than the the rest of the years that I served under Republican CiCs.

Those Republican presidents only knew how to pay lip service to the troops, while all that time, they served the interests of the military industrial complex.

Democratic presidents like Clinton and Obama know that it's really all about what the country can do for the troops, as the troops serve the nation.

Believe, you me, the troops in these pictures know that as well.

Democrats want to be respected, Republicans want to be feared. And I have seen such posts on other message boards from Republicans. They think being feared is a sign of strength. They just don't get that the best thing there is is for your country to be respected and for other countries to aspire to be like you

This President makes me so proud.

59. I'm sure the pictures are getting the conservanazis
all pissed off. I'd say the troops that are greeting him look like they are happy to see him. If you of you conservanazis who claim to be active military and hate Obama, you are not much of a troop. I served my country under Tricky Dick. We all knew he was a crook and he proved it.
So, it you don't like Obama greeting some happy and excited troops, do look at the pictures, toadie.

They use the troops as backdrop, as photo-op scenery, and both have that hero-worship-kinda-element that's just creepy.

Edited on Sun Mar-28-10 09:48 PM by saltpoint
visited in Kabul and their friends and family back in Dayton and Omaha and Bakersfield? I bet many, and I bet they'll lift a lot of boats all around.

A mom or dad serving in Afghanistan this night can say to a daughter or son, "Guess who came to visit us this weekend?" And, "President Obama has a very busy job but he took the time to come see us, and we were really glad to see him."

There's a lot of good will generated by this president. It's a week before Easter or so, a day before Passover... and these soldiers are in an unfriendly place. "The Land of Bones," one writer called Afghanistan.

I keep looking over these pictures and the smiles on people's faces look awfully real to me.

Sharp jacket. Warm heart.

115. As a vet, the first thing I noticed was the ranks of those he was with...
I saw only one O-2, a First lieutenant...near as I could see beyond that, he was with the enlisted tanks, the privates and airmen; that is the sign of a leader. The generals, colonels etc usually get the photo-ops and what press the system wishes to put out there...but it is the lower enlisted ranks that get the jobs done when called upon...without them, there would be no military.

When this man walked into a Mess Hall, without an iodine painted turkey, and with individuals eating and getting ready for what will be a hard day, he raised the morale of soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines for the entire area. He showed he cared about the individuals, the men and women who bear the burdens in conflict.

During WWII, there were 2 generals that spent a lot of time with the troops, Omar Bradley and Teddy Roosevelt Jr., both of these men were lvoed and respected by the troops because they were there, in the thick of it getting first hand information and making decisions that affected how things would go. TR Jr went ashore on D-Day with the first wave, no other general officer was on the beaches and his presence made a world of difference and motivated pinned down troops to overcome wild odds.

What I'm getting at, is that a show of leadership to the troops is worth more in scheme of things than all of the platitudes, medals and hoopla that goes with military life. Taking a few minutes to talk with a soldier does more than one can realize.

Now, if the president can get our people out of there, we'll be getting just that much further down the road to making this world a tad more peaceful.

:patriot:

125. He was Asst Div Commander, 4th Infantry Division...
Edited on Mon Mar-29-10 09:53 AM by rasputin1952
and had to threaten to take the issue to FDR to a go ashore on Utah Beach. His Division CDR, MG Barton agreed to TR Jr going ashore with the first wave, (with regret, thinking how it would be for him if TR's son was killed on D-Day).

Anyway, he went ashore on the first wave with the 8th Infantry Regiment and the 70th Tank Battalion, (side note here, when I was in the Army & stationed at Wiesbaden Germany, I was with the 4th Div and 1/70 AR, just an odd side note...:) ), and they landed South of where they were supposed to be. When asked by his Bn Cdr's what they should do, TR Jr stated, "We start the war from right here." They broke through the defenses and seized their objectives, for his forward action and leadership, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, (posthumously). He died of a heart attack on 12July1944.

He suffered from heart disease and extensive arthritis, but nothing ever got him down when leading his troops. He was a true to life "General of the Field".

Hew also had an exemplary WWI record.

A pic:

He is buried in the US Military Cemetery in Normandy:

So very true.

Obama is NOT, I repeat, NOT using the troops as a back drop. All these photos are amateur and the facial expressions appear real and the respect seems genuine and not forced. This is not an Officer's Mess Hall but an Enlisted Mess Hall (imho). There are no attempts at forced humour, just a genuine thank you from the CIC.

130. What I saw in those pic's was a very real sense that PO cares
for the troops and was there to show them he cares.

bush, on the other hand, spent his time surrounded by high ranking individuals, with a few enlisted tossed in for "fluff".

There are ways a soldier "knows" he is cared about and for. On one occasion during Winter Operations in Germany, we were told to place our track behind a snow bank, no problem, but no one had given us the date/time group when the rest of the Bn would move out, we sat there waiting for word, but under radio silence, and the fact that someone forgot we were there, we waited in vain. We were out of fuel, food and it was dipping into the negatives temp wise. We gathered up what cash we had, dollars and marks, and 3 of us headed to town to get some provisions. We bought out the local bakery/deli of brotchen, ham, cheese and some other stuff, then on out way back, the Asst Div Cdr, a Brigadier, pulled up in his jeep. I was the ranking individual, so I was on the spot to talk to someone I had only heard existed. e asked me how things were going, and instead of the usual "fine, sir", I told him where we were,, we were out of food and fuel and would like to figure out where the Bn had gone. After showing him on the map where our track was located, we trudged back to our site. Within 15 minutes, we had fuel, hot chow and another track to lead us to the Bn. Thing is, w/o being straight up w/the general, we would have bee out there for a lot longer...these guys work for the enlisted men who have to carry out the orders, this BG realized that, and saved us from some serious problems.

Some officers were good, most mediocre, to downright bad. The same with presidents, we went from a disaster to a winner...I figure those men and women know that...:)

I was never shy to respectfully tell it like it was. I good leader always helps those under him to do their job. That is why we have such sorry leaders in Banking and business these days. They are too busy lining their pockets, often at the expense of the 'troops'. The tarp bail out is a classic case.

146. This blog in the LA times is outrageously Manipulative!
It cherry picked this photo of Pres Obama and got one of bush where the soldiers were mobbing him like they do Obama in other pics. And, then it went on to talk about the two different styles of the presidents..and the comments underneath were naturally reflecting the photos.

Actually, it's not even this one..it's close but it's in the link below this pic..

I wish we could send a pic to this blog that reflects the reality of what really happened when the President went to Afghanistan.

Maybe I could send this link?:)
