I hate them and hate their politics and stances on most issues.....but.....

They stand behind their supporters and get shit passed!

They submit bills THEIR supporters want!

They fight harder for their stances than the Dems ever do!

They unite when needed to pass bills their supporters want!

They arm twist their senate and house members and get the votes they need!

They control the public stupidity much better than the Dems do, they lie most of the time, but they know how to control it!

Our party basically is a hodge podge of people worried about their own asses and not the party.

3. It's much more than that

They know how to frame the debates and run a cohesive narrative- and they project strength, while the Dems repeatedly look weak and ineffective.

Other people have said it- and I agree, you have to admire the ability to come back from nearly being relegated to the fringe for a generation, considering what they have to work with.

There are lessons aplenty to be learned by the Democratic leadership in all of this, though there isn't much in the history of the past few decades that makes me optimistic that they will.

2. I dunno if their supporters actually want the bills they pass
But whatever does get passed is either marketed to them as the greatest thing since sliced bread (i.e. tax cuts) or something you can blame the Democrats/liberals/DC for (everything else that they pass and turns to shit).

5. It didn't used to be that way ...
... Democrats controlled both houses of Congress pretty much from 1949 until 1995. And elected Kennedy, Johnson and Carter during that period. And they got stuff done from civil rights to Medicare to environmental protection and on and on.

They used to know how do to politics and do it very well.

What happened?

who pandered to the corporate right rather than standing up for traditional Democratic values.

20. It's a lot more than that...
by our very nature, we are far more diversified than the GOP, and trying to bring 100 factors together is far more difficult than keeping 5 factors in line.

Most of what D's consider priorities, are factor based, even though they might be exemplary goals. The lack of prioritizing keeps much legislation from being passed, and when legislation fails, it the D "norm" to wail and howl, while forgetting that new action and tactics are necessary.

The GOP makes gains, (whether good or bad, mostly bad), because they focus on the relatively simplistic. Tax cuts are a prime example, no one I know benefited from the bush tax cuts, in fact, many found themselves actually paying higher taxes because they were no where near the brackets that were affected...but, they bought into it because they thought they would benefit.

The other aspect is that regardless of how we feel humans are intelligent, the reality is, we don't really think unless we have to. Change requires thought, usually a lot of it, thought creates change, not many people embrace change, especially "radical societal changes". Civil Rights, Women's Suffrage and a host of other things were societal upheavals, and were only taken seriously when people began to think, challenging long held beliefs. In the R world, it is easier to let others do the thinking, even if it is detrimental, and just follow along.

6. Yes, they are ...
better at "politics" ...

they are putrid at actual government, and ideologically deranged at this point ...

I guess you can take pot shots at Ds, who are far too scared of their own shadows ...

But, at the end of the day, the bullspit the right spews is PATENTLY and SCREAMINGLY apparent, and the Ds are on the right side of things more often than not ...

It is the people voting - you can lead a horse to water and all ...

Ds could use a spine, but short of that, it is a friggen democracy, and if people want to line up behind batsnot crazy lunatics who lie like rugs ...

8. You don't get it - it does NOTHING if dems don't know how to weild POWER when they have it!!!
If they are too afraid to DO ANYTHING, as is the case now, it does NOBODY any good!

The only "good" thing is that we're in a "holding patter" where no good is done, but no further damage is done, until the repukes return to power...

21. Yeah - a bit of hypebole ...
Look, I agree wholeheatedly that the dems are too passive ...

But, they HAVE done a lot over the last year ...

It just is not dealing in reality on any level to say they have done nothing ... For all the warts, and falling short of the projected liberal crusader people have annointed him as, BO has done more in his first year than any president in history ...

Your hyperbole to the left side is about the same as the hyperbole of the right ...

Ds are not great shakes, but while the right lines up 100 percent behind them for better or for worse, the left is looking for the utopia that is never going to exist, then help to perpetuate the characterization that right and MSM paints of the left ...

9. GOP once argued they knew how to govern but Dems knew how to get elected. Have things changed?
Perhaps neither party knows how to govern the world's superpower in the 21st century.

11. The GOP doesn't debate anything in their party, and doesn't have to pretend to care
or actually care what happens to people. It is much, much easier to appeal to people's worst natures then actually appeal to their better side. The Rethug agenda is easy to do, let everything go to crap and throw some tax cuts in. Be Patriotic and support the troops. Dems are all about nuance, questioning, wanting to tackle huge problems. That is part of the problem. And the Dem party is way more diverse.

Ruthless leaders and blindly obedient followers can be very effective but those qualities have never bee highly prized in a democracy. We do not "beat" the enemy by becoming them.

13. Worried about their own asses and not the party
Well, how many posts have i seen stating that "we don't march in lockstep" with any party.

We pride ourselves on it.

We'd rather debate than "get things done."

Further, it is difficult for us to get things done. the system favors he who does not want anything done. There are limits on the federal government's actions, though they have been stretched as far as possible. That's what the right complains about.

As to "arm twisting" I don't know what is meant by that, but I don't approve of it. If we can't get something fair and square under the law as it is, then we don't get it and accept that. Leave that crap to the republicans. It is what the voters were tired of when they wanted change. And Obama said he would respect our system and as far as I can tell, he does.

Dems usually have the right ideas, but Pugs still hold the bigger microphones.

It's not fair to begin with, so comparing us to them is even less so.

18. Sigh
Here we go again, with the rethugs are better cuz they stick together bs. Why are people still acting surprised the party in power is receiving a backlash, it happens to every president heading into the midterms. The only reason it didn't happen to GWB was because of 911, Americans wanted to stand behind him after those attacks. Dems need to stop whinning and band together like we did in the 08 election. Everyone is talking, but not actually doing anything.

23. Not really.
They stand behind their supporters and get shit passed! (Like what? Tax cuts for the rich. Oh, I forget that their constituents are all rich. When was the last time a Republican passed a jobs bill? Guess their constituents don't need jobs.)

They submit bills THEIR supporters want! (Yea, the Terry Schiavo bill was a big hit.)

They fight harder for their stances than the Dems ever do! (Tell that to Paul Ryan.)

They unite when needed to pass bills their supporters want! (Like tax cuts for the rich? Torture?)

They arm twist their senate and house members and get the votes they need! (Tell that to Specter, Collins and Snowe)

They control the public stupidity much better than the Dems do, they lie most of the time, but they know how to control it! (Media controls public stupidity, the GOP is just the beneficiary.)

Our party basically is a hodge podge of people worried about their own asses and not the party. (The Democratic Party is comprised of people who think for themselves. The Party doesn't advocate purity tests.

Republicans simply operate to destroy shit, and their constituents don't look to them for solutions, just a win over Democrats. Why? Because they benefit from the bills passed by Democrats (see the stimulus).

Because that is what I believe the plurality of their voters would say they wanted over the past 30 years, neck and neck with being "safe". (Not that I believe what they say)
