Butler University in Indy REJECTS Chief Justice Roberts as commencement speaker. Go Dawgs!
Edited on Sat Mar-13-10 09:49 AM by Vinnie From Indy
The Faculty Senate at Butler University in Indianapolis has rejected Hoosier Justice Roberts as a commencement speaker.

*********************************************************************************************************
If U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts comes to his niece's graduation at Butler University, it won't be as the commencement speaker.
A student-led proposal to invite Roberts, an Indiana native whose niece is in Butler's senior class, to speak at Butler's May 8 graduation was shot down by faculty members. The move disappointed students and raised the ire of some conservatives on campus, but university leaders said they wanted to avoid the controversy that a visit by the Supreme Court jurist might bring.

"We try to steer clear of political divides if possible," said pharmacy school Professor Jeanne VanTyle, president of Butler's faculty senate.

In more than 30 years, the school has made two exceptions to its no-politicians rule by inviting Evan Bayh when he was Indiana governor and Gov. Mitch Daniels in 2009, VanTyle said.

"Last year, I watched half of the audience cheer and half of the audience frown," she said. "That's not what someone's commencement ought to be."

1. Go Dawgs!
For a private school for wealthy students, this is outstanding.

2. Off topic -- please remove the row of asterisks
They prevent the body text from wrapping, making the article very difficult to read on small screens (like iPods).

6. No politicians for commencement sounds like a wonderful policy
I agree that it is a needless distraction to the focus of the event.
