Elle Magazine snubs its own First Lady to award Mrs.Obama First Place for Best Dressed Women

http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/fashion/article6935262.ece

Elle magazine, the Parisiennes’ style bible, has proclaimed that Michelle Obama is more chic than Carla Bruni. The magazine’s annual best-dressed list, unveiled yesterday, awarded first place in the category of “political chic” to America’s First Lady, and second to France’s Première Dame.

2. Wow! I remember when Michelle was
in France and Carla and she were pictured together we had a poster going on and on about how Carla's clothes were so much more chic, you know.

3. That may be why Michelle got it......
She ain't perfect like a store mannequin...
which can become quite boring,
and makes folks not even want to see what your wearing,
cause it's always almost too perfect.

Michelle is real,
and it appears that some folks appreciate that quite a bit.

24. Yeah... I don't always like Michelle Obama's choices but overall she's more interesting...
Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is pretty boring and predictable.

You think that is attractive and stylish?

I see floodwater pants and godawful ugly sneakers. As they say, beauty is in the beholder's eye :-)

I agree that feeding hungry folks is great.

"I dont care how much they cost, those are adorable."

That's what I disagree with. To each his own. ;-)

.... if someone is helping collect food for the needy then WHATEVER shoes they're wearing ... ARE FREAKIN AWESOME! ;)

WASHINGTON - APRIL 29: First lady Michelle Obama, along with congressional spouses and volunteers, fills plastic bags with non-perishable food items for distribution at the Capitol Area Food Bank for Feeding America on April 29, 2009 in Washington , D.C.

12. Honest? Those have to be the UGLIEST shoes that I've ever laid eyes on.
My 15 y.o. wears some similar looking shoes but she's young and impressionable.

Damn, those are FUGLY shoes - but I've never been a slave to fashion and despise LABELS such as J. Crew. :puke:

15. J. Crew isn't so much a label, than it is a lifestyle......
Whether one is dressing via J.Jill or other middle income middle age middle price brands mixed with Target and Old Navy and Gap, as the First Lady has, there ain't nothing wrong with that.....
and those shoes look fine; and apparently ELLE agrees.

rags disguised as "fashion aficionados."

Those shoes are not only Gawd awful ugly, they have no visible ARCH SUPPORT.

SnF, et. al., anti-fashion punks, having the flat feet of Wilma Flinstone, set their own lifestyle with shoes PRIMARILY of orthopedic quality.

17. When I say a lifestyle, I mean one buys separates like sweaters, pants,
etc.... makes it easy to get dressed and look good.

The clothes are well made, are not too trendy and last a long time.

I'd rather pay $100 for a good pair of pants that last me 5 years,
than to buy something cheaper that falls apart or/and doesn't fit well.

Fashion is about how clothes look; when I speak of a lifestyle,
I mean how well your clothes fit the life you lead.

19. Not sure what her clothes have to do with it
She's one of these people who would look fantastic even if they wore burlap bags all the time.

20. Well...if fashion is one of the ways we look at people...
MO has it hands down. She is a remarkably graceful woman, with a fantastic sense of what looks good on her. I'm not a fashion kind of guy, but I think that her smile alone could melt the coldest of hearts.

Anyway, I recall the drapery that Nancy Reagan wore; the bags that Bab's bush wore; and the earth tone frumpiness of Laura bush. I see MO as a breath of fresh air, not only is her sense of style excellent, (at least form my POV), but she carries herself impeccably, exceptionally distinguished and intelligent...w/o any air of arrogance.

:woohoo:

21. I think this paragraph tells what their reasoning was:
The Elle style jury, led by Nathalie Rykiel, of the Sonia Rykiel house, said that the emphasis this year was on strong personalities who shone with a distinctive style. “Mrs Obama resembles no one else — her style is unique,” said Elle. “She encourages young designers and has succeeded in imposing the waisted cardigan as official dress.”

I don't see Carla Brunni as having much of a personality, I'm sure that she does, but she seems to be beauty over substance. Although I will be the first to say that since I don't speak french, I don't know.

(I certainly cannot afford what any of them wears, even if I recognize that J Crew is a lot more affordable than most of the things previous first ladies wore),

I find whatever she does to help people (and there she certainly does a lot more than Bruni does) is a lot more important?

26. You may be right that it is what FLOTUS does that is most important......
and the fact that she has worn clothes from Target in fact has, in its own way helped women, who in the past didn't believe they could buy clothes at Target and look stylish. She also has worn items from GAP and Old Navy. So all in all, she may be the only First Lady anywhere that has worn something that you can go to the store and pick up for like $25.00!

Here she is with a Target Dress Selection

and here she dons a $10.00 T-Shirt from Gap in meeting with a former First Lady
