South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham hit the campaign trail Tuesday to lend his national security credentials to Republican Senate candidate Carly Fiorina's campaign against Sen. Barbara Boxer.
Graham, who has emerged as his party's leading voice on issues related to the treatment and prosecution of terrorism suspects, planned to join Fiorina at the San Francisco International Airport to promote legislation he has authored that would bar suspected Sept. 11 plotters from civilian courts.
"They will call on Boxer to support Graham’s legislation to keep the trials out of civilian courts on U.S. soil and also his efforts to halt detainee transfer to countries with a significant Al Qaeda presence," Fiorina spokeswoman Julie Soderlund said.
Graham, who wants Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and others involved in the 9/11 attacks tried in military tribunals, delivered his party's weekend radio address on the issue, declaring: "Al Qaeda terrorists should not receive more rights than a Nazi war criminal."
A spokesman for Boxer did not say whether the senator supports Graham's legislation, but warned against legislation that might limit the options of prosecutors.
