Amann to drop bid for governor
James A. Amann, of Milford, the former speaker of the House who left the General Assembly to run for governor, is withdrawing his bid for the Democratic nomination.

Amann did not return calls for comment Wednesday afternoon, but a source with knowledge of Amann's plans said he will abandon the attempt to become the first Democratic governor since William A. O'Neill left office in January 1991.

Amann, a longtime member of the state House, served two consecutive two-year terms as speaker, but did not run for re-election to the Legislature in 2008 because he wanted to concentrate on succeeding Gov. M. Jodi Rell.

But without the public platform in the General Assembly, Amann stalled in fundraising and remained in the low single digits in state gubernatorial polls. According to his last campaign-finance filing with state officials, he had a little more than $1,000 on hand, with debts of about $29,000.
