AP: Senate Democrats Draft $82.5 Billion Jobs Plan
Senate Democrats draft $82.5 billion jobs plan

The Associated Press
Monday, January 25, 2010; 7:56 PM

WASHINGTON -- Top Senate Democrats have drafted an $82.5 billion "jobs" plan that would help small businesses, boost spending on road construction and mass transit, and give local governments money to retain teachers.

The draft document proposes $20 billion for a job creation tax credit and $12.5 billion to retrofit homes and businesses to make them more energy efficient. It has not been publicly released but a summary was obtained by The Associated Press.

The debt-financed plan faces a difficult path through Congress, especially since Republicans now control enough seats to maintain a filibuster in the Senate. The House passed a significantly larger plan last month.

The plan also would rescind $150 billion in unused Wall Street bailout authority.

1. I keep telling myself that it'll be fun watching the Repukes obstruct a new jobs bill
But the reality is the media will let them get away with it.

MAKE THEM FILIBUSTER!

8. I have no doubt they will filibuster
They're stubborn and own the media. They'll just tell their Fox buddies to say that more spending is bad, and Americans will swallow it.

2. so how does that fly with a domestic spending freeze??
Seems like it would have to be a no-go.
And FINALLY we have the word DOMESTIC back in the lexicon.
I thought it was gone forever once HOMELAND got here.

Interesting that 'domestic' comes back for a spending freeze, huh?
Not sure what to make of that.

Guess we couldn't say we are freezing HOMELAND SPENDING, now, could we?

3. I asked the same question in another thread...
A spending freeze is the Republcian Solution to this situation. The Democratic (i.e., sane) Solution is to create short-term deficits in order to stimulate the economy. Actually, it was the Republican Solution back in the 1980's -- it's just that Reagan spent the money on military hardware. Same effect, though.

13. Spending on the military never has the multiplier effect that spending
on domestic programs does...

5. the freeze is going to be targeted. We don't know the details on the targets yet
although we know it is not targeting defense spending, VA benefits and a few other items.

6. It's interesting. Two spending initiatives and a freeze. You're probably right

9. It Should Be Targetted...
Not all spending results in job creation. There are ways to get more bang for the buck. Using some of the left over bail out funds for a jobs bills sounds smart.

11. Like they always do...with their heads up their collective asses
They are against everything, so it is easy for them. They want the govt. of Haiti, or Somalia. The govt. of nothing. Anarchy, chaos. Oh, except when it comes to the wealthy.

12. Irrelevant question. The freeze is only partial and you have no idea what it applies to yet.

10. "$12.5 billion to retrofit homes"
I wish they would quit talking about this and just do it. Replacing my old wooden '70s windows in the house and/or my 20 yr. old heat pump are the ONLY major purchases I can see myself committing to for the foreseable future. Cutting my energy comsuption by 50-60% would immediately give us more dollars to spend for something else.

14. They have just done it all ready. Right NOW you can get a nice sized tax credit for replacing those.

For a smart woman, she sure is stupid.

17. Peanuts anyone? Filibuster against peanuts?
Edited on Tue Jan-26-10 03:06 PM by Better Believe It

They might, but Democrats haven't forced Republicans to filibuster even once this year so I rather doubt it.

Oh .... I get it!

Some Republican as they leave the Senate chamber may give Senator Reid a piece of paper claiming they are engaged in a filibuster!
