Someone tell me that H.Clinton did not shut down Haiti airport to fly in new outfit
This is being reported in a column over at Commondreams. http://www.commondreams.org/view/2010/01/24

Occupation in Humanitarian Clothing

by Jesse Hagopian

Everything you need to know about the U.S. aid effort to assist Haiti in the wake of the catastrophic earthquake can be summed up by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's touchdown in Port-Au-Prince on Saturday, January 16: they shut down the airport for three hours surrounding her arrival for "security" reasons, which meant that no aid flights could come in during those critical hours.

If there was one day when the Haitian people needed aid to flow all day long, last Saturday was it because the people trapped under the rubble on Tuesday evening couldn't survive much beyond that without water.

Defenders of Clinton will say that her disimpassioned, monotone, photo-op speech was needed in Haiti to draw attention to the plight of the Haitians. But no one north of hell can defend her next move: according to airport personnel that I spoke to during my recent evacuation from Haiti, she paralyzed the airport later that same day to have a new outfit flown in from the Dominican Republic. I am having a hard time readjusting to life back home after having survived the earthquake and witnessing so much death, so even typing those words is making my heart pound uncontrollably.

Now, personally I think it appalling that she and the Admin thought it worth three hours of flights to get her on the ground in Haiti for what amounts to a meaningless photo-op that did not save one life, give one person a drop of water or one child food, but even I, who am in the habit of calling her Cluster-Bomb Clinton, would never imagine that she would halt aid delivery for a new outfit. I hope to the goddess that this is false, a mistake or a misunderstanding on the part of either the writer or the airport workers, because our conduct in Haiti is bad enough without it. We seem to be solely occupied with getting troops, not aid, on the ground there.

And what use are those troops? How is it that the US military, that boasts of killing people (who almost always turn out to be children and other civilians) from thousands of miles away cannot get food and water distributed to Haiti? How is it that:

The Geneva-based organization Doctors Without Borders has been turned away from the airport numerous times to allow U.S. troops to land. A ring of U.S. war ships surround Haiti to make sure that Haitians don't escape the disaster and try to get to the United States. The U.S. has taken control of Haiti's main airport and seaport, and is in the process of deploying 18,000 U.S. troops to bolster the 9,000 UN troops already occupying the island nation--and as an eyewitness I can tell you those troops are guarding their own compounds rather than distributing aid.

How is it that just this past Friday Amy Goodman of Democracy Now was reporting from a town in the epicenter of the quake where NO ONE had arrived with any search and rescue, any medical care, any aid at all since the disaster? We can kill babies in AfPak but can't get food and water to people practically just off our shores?

If this is the best the rich, developed, industrial, oh-so-expert at killing and destruction West can do in a disaster, then we are nothing but a juggernaut of death and destruction, and all the good will and generosity of the American people, who are donating millions to aid Haiti, will do nothing to actually help save and rebuild lives, but only keep some people alive on scraps while the Disaster Capitalist ghouls move in for the economic kill.

1. It's a bullshit story.

The airport was shut down for four hours during her visit because she stayed at the airport the entire time -- so she didn't divert security resources that should go to Haitians. (And remember, she was there at the request of the Haitian president.)

She brought in a planeload of food and water for U.S. Embassy employees.

And if you look at the pictures of her during her Haiti trip, she is wearing the exact same outfit from the time she stepped off the plane until the time she left.

Don't know where this story originated, or why CommonDreams repeated it as if it were fact, but it's truly vicious.

14. I am glad to read that about what she wore
Since it would seem to discredit the claim. However, it was a bad - callous, inhumane - decision to send her in person if it meant four hours of aid flights to get her on the ground.

As for the Haitian President's request - LOL, like we pay much attention to what any Haitian wants if it conflicts with what we want.

As for "diverting security resources" - well, now, that wouldn't even be a factor if we didn't find it necessary - for some unfathomable reason other than publicity - to put her on the ground there at all.

A callous disregard for what the Haitians needed right at that minute, as far as I am concerned.

2. You should have posted this over at GD.
I'm sure there are some ready to pounce on this.

Defenders of Clinton will say that her disimpassioned, monotone, photo-op speech was needed in Haiti to draw attention to the plight of the Haitians.

Sounds like a hater to me, but what do I know?

15. This just proves that some on the left are just as batty as the kooks on the extreme right.
For the freaking last time, she was ASKED to go there by president Preval. She remained at the airport during her short stay precisely to avoid using needed resources. She brought over 600 lbs. of supplies. Supplies that were in large part purchased by State Dept. employees to take to their fellow coworkers serving in Haiti. She brought back 50 US earthquake survivors.

Oh, and one more thing, video footage showed her wearing the same damn clothes the entire 5 hours she was in the country. Why the HELL would she need an outfit to be flown in for the Dominican Republic????

The bullshit emanating from the left is worse than the crap in the RW blogs because at least the left should know better than to propagate this kind of B.S.

"H.Clinton did not shut down Haiti airport to fly in new outfit."

This story is nonsense and it's only going to cause a flamewar, so I'm going to lock this now.
