Obama appears at District church where King spoke
updated 11 a.m.

By Hamil R. Harris

President Obama on Sunday worshipped at an historic African American congregation in Northwest Washington, his second appearance at a local church since taking office one year ago. Obama, the nation's first African American president, was to speak from a pulpit where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. once stood.

The president arrived about 10:45 at at the Vermont Avenue Baptist Church, a 144-year-old congregation in the Logan Circle area. On February 7, 1968, King delivered a sermon that was part of a series entitled "In search of a sense of direction."

The family life center of the church, where worshippers gathered because the sanctuary is being renovated, was filled with several hundred congregants who braved a cold rain to be screened by U.S. Secret Service agents before they could get in.

"This is very special day," said Prince George's County Council member Sam Dean, chairman of the church's trustee board , "It is a momentus occasion that the president chose to come here."

The Rev. Cornelius Wheeler was to yield his pulpit to the president so he could deliver remarks that, according to sources, will draw upon King's words. Aides said last week that the president and first lady would attend a church service in Washington, but they did not identify the church.
