Salazar: Without Bush administration, oil industry no longer 'kings of world'
By Ben Geman - 01/06/10 02:29 PM ET

The Obama administration will expand environmental reviews before leasing federal lands to the oil and gas industry, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced Wednesday.

The environmental studies are one of several new policies announced by Salazar that drew immediate rebukes from the industry and highlighted the shift at Interior from the Bush administration, which was close to oil and gas companies.

Salazar highlighted the contrast with the last administration, and hailed the expanded environmental studies as evidence that oil companies have seen their influence on federal leasing decisions wane.

“The difference is that under the prior administration, the oil and gas industry were essentially the kings of the world. Whatever they wanted to happen essentially happened. This department was essentially a handmaiden of the oil and gas industry,” he said on a conference call with reporters.

“We have brought that to an end."

1. He's one of the leading possibilities to run for Colorado governor now that Ritter won't run

3. Yes, I've read that. What are Dorgan's quals for that position?
 Sounds like he's open to a position...

7. You mean Dorgan would take Salazar's job?
Well, seems like presidents like to pick people from the west. And Dorgan is no more qualified than Salazar who was a Senator when he was asked.

12. It's plausible and Ed asked Dorgan if he would accept a cabinet position
I thought that was an odd question at the time. But it does all make sense.

I don't think Ritter made his decision on the spur of the moment. Some here think he was shoved. So if the White House asked Ritter not to run for reelection, the administration would have to have some plan for who would run for governor. Maybe they want Salazar. Dorgan could be a natural choice to replace Salazar being a person from the west.

Looks like a game of musical chairs where Ritter is the one left without a seat. But there's always "lobbyist". Oy. :eyes:

2. WTF? The oil and gas shipped to Afghanistan is making both Big Oil and the MIC filthy RICH.
But it sounds kind of sweet so let's go with that sentiment? :eyes:

It's been a big deal here in the west that he clipped their sails.

4. I won't argue with Salazar
but Pharma has stepped in to fill a big chunk of the void in America. Big oil lost a lot of it's leverage when demand went in the tank and people could no longer afford to pay the ransom.

5. He's right. Big Pharma is in charge now.

But I am still paying $2.85/gal. That's too much, imo, and, yes, I know other countries pay more but I think 2.85 is still too high.

6. BTW We need Salazar back!!!
As he is the best against Scott Mcinnis(R)... As the Governor of Colorado Ritter announced he will not be running for reelection.

http://www.denverpost.com/newsheadlines/ci_14132863

Salazar has stated his dream job would be Governor and we NEED to keep (big Oil) Mcinnis out of the governors mansion.

Ritter is stepping aside and Salazar beats Mcinnis in head to head polling.

Already has Obamas approval to come home and defend our beautiful State

9. His long family history here sure helps
He's won a statewide election for the Senate so he's known all over.

I sure hope he's a good friend to labor and to state employees & us retirees.

of demographics.
