He was flown this afternoon from Asuncion for emergency treatment at the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital in Sao Paulo. There are mixed signals on the state of his health -- that he is in no danger, and that his condition is worrying.

Media reports from Asuncion say a thrombosis was detected in his chest.

Another report said he had an infection of the pharynx. (Disorders include pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and CANCER.)

Lugo has been hospitalized six times in the past two months in Brazil and Asuncion for lymphatic cancer.

The vice president, Federico Franco, will take over the presidency for the next five days if Lugo is unable to return this weekend.

(Lugo's condition prevented him from attending the UNASUR conference in Buenos Aires on Thursday night.)

1. Thanks for the update! His election in the summer of 2008 was such a joy!
And it was such a wonderful event for Paraguay--their first leftist president, ever--and for all of Latin America's many new leftist leaders. They all went to his inauguration and had a great party. I saw some of the vid of it.

I'll never forget Evo Morales's response to Lugo's election. He sent Lugo a telegram: "Welcome to the Axis of Evil!"

Also memorable: Lugo and Hugo Chavez on stage singing the hit song "Todo Cambio" ("Everything Changes"). What a moment!

Oh, one other thing. I read that Lugo is close to Rafael Correa--old friends from way back. It must have bothered Lugo a lot not to be able to attend that UNASUR meeting.

I do so hope that Lugo will recover from his illnesses. He is such a good man, a former Catholic bishop totally on the side of the poor all his life. Get well, Fernando!

5. If the guy has lymph cancer type II, he is dead in 2 months
There is no cure for type II. If he has type I, then maybe he can survive for a year, but the treatment can induce failure of the kidneys. I suspect he is too old to be functioning in the future.

2. As Peace Patriot brought up, Lugo was the one who broke the hideous power of the Colorado Party,
which has controlled Paraguay all these many years, as well as the 35 or more years of the genocidal, Nazi-sheltering (Dr. Mengele- harboring) fascist Stroessner.

Fernando Lugo suffered throughout his life for his beliefs, and for his support for the vast poor underclass of Paraguay. His father and brothers suffered, too, some of them tortured.

Hope so much he will have the time he needs, and his country needs to see some GOOD achieved there under Lugo's careful watch. Hoping for his health to be restored to him, in time.

Paraguayan president doing fine after blood clot treatment
By the CNN Wire Staff
October 3, 2010 4:43 p.m. EDT

(CNN) -- Paraguay's cancer-stricken president is "lucid, "perfectly fine" and will not require surgery at this point, his doctor said Sunday.

President Fernando Lugo is currently undergoing treatment at the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital in San Paolo, Brazil. His doctor, Alfredo Boccia, said the president had a blood clot, which is not an uncommon side effect of chemotherapy.

"The clot has broken up in an important way. This is extremely positive and takes the president out of the risky situation that he was in," Boccia said in a statement.

He added Lugo will not require surgery at this point and that he is "perfectly fine, lucid, and without problems and pain."

8. They don't give detail about Lugo
I think they should provide more detail, because this is important. Lugo has a few years to serve as president, and he provides the country with a very balanced position which helps to bring the nation forward, without unrest and other panics. But it is hard to believe people, because the hospitals in Paraguay may not be so good if they had to travel to Brazil.

9. The condition of their hospitals is not Lugo's fault. He hasn't been there long enough to transform
them, has he?

The country has been under the control of the filthy fascist Colorado Party for many decades, including the time taken by the genocidal friend of Nazi Doctor Mengele after the Second World War, when Stroessner, who ruled Paraguay for over 35 years, allowed him shelter, and protection in his country.

The Colorado Party only looked out for the very wealthy, the tiny elite. Paraguay has the fewest paved roads per capita in Latin America, even had the fewest phones per household. I learned that years ago researching Stroessner. They've been damned POOR there, with only the oligarchs faring well, and the rest of the country struggling in deep, DEEP poverty.
