PART 1: A Cuban refugee's odyssey to America
Norberto Gonzalez Jr. knows something about the American Dream

He’s paid in flesh and blood for that wisdom: First, having spent two decades in Fidel Castro’s authoritarian regime; then, having risked everything to make a new life on democratic soil; and finally, living with permanent injuries sustained in serving his newfound homeland as a lance corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps.

“Freedom is everything. I didn’t have that growing up (in Cuba),” he said.

“I want (my children) to have that. My family is free. My kids are free … to do whatever they want to do. To think whatever they want to think.”
