Atahualpa Yupanqui - Duerme negrito

Sleep, sleep little black boy
Your mother is in the fields, little black boy
She will bring quails
for you
She will bring tasty fruit
for you
She will bring many things
for you.

But if the little black boy doesn't sleep
the white devil will come
and snap! He will eat the little boy's leg
Munch, munch, munch,
munch, munch, munch,

Lay laray la la laray la

Your mother is in the fields,
little black boy,
working, yes
working all day
working, yes
Sleep, sleep, little black boy
Your mother is in the fields,
Your mother is in the fields,
little black boy, little black boy,

Duerme, duerme, negrito
Que tu mama esta en el campo, negrito
Te va a traer codornices
Para ti
Te va a traer rica fruta
Para ti
Te va a traer muchas cosas
Para ti.
Y si el negro no se duerme
Viene el diablo blanco
Y zas le come la patita
Chacap, chacap, chacap,
Chacap, chacap, chacap,
Lay laray la la laray la
Que tu mama esta en el campo
Negrito,
Trabajando, (si)
Trabajando,todo el dia,
Trabajando, si.
Duerme, duerme, negrito
Que tu mama esta en el campo
Negrito, negrito

1.  WONDERFUL rendition of this beautiful, beloved song.

Heard of this song first from DU member rabs who mentioned it around a conversation concerning Mercedes Sosa.

Just looked it up, saw that Victor Jara also did a famous version of the song.

Had to find out who Atahualpa Yupanqui is, in complete amazement by his name! It's a tribute to these two famous Incan leaders. The singer " is considered the most important Argentine folk musician of the 20th century."

It was good to see his entire presentation of the song. So glad to have seen it. Thank you.

2. He gives credit in this rendition
Edited on Thu Mar-11-10 09:00 PM by Xipe Totec
to the "Morenos" (black people) of the Caribe region between Colombia and Venezuela.

He says, "It would have been an honor for me to have composed this song, but it is not mine"

3. Yes, what a surprise! I never would have guessed that area as the birthplace of that song.
Atahualpa Yupanqui really brought it new life in his own rendition.
