Brief update on Chile 3/2/10

Bill's wife arrives in Santiago on Tuesday. She told Bachelet the United States would be sending aid by and by in addition to the 25 satellite phones Hil delivered today.

--------------------------------------

Death toll today was at 795.

-----------------------

Army put a quick stop to "looting" in Concepcion. The mainstream English-language media (including scumbag rick sanchez of CNN) has been making a big deal of looting, while in reality people were searching mostly for food, milk and diapers for infants and potable water. Night curfew still in effect in hard-hit cities of Constitucion, Concepcion and Talca.

--------------------------------

Rescue workers recover a body on Tuesday. A strong aftershock forced a halt to the searches.

----------------------------

Supermarkets reopened in Santiago where the situation is reported calm. The subway is running, water is being restored where it was cut, electricity and telephone service has been restored. No looting reported in Santago according to police.

---------------------------------

Peru's Alan Garcia arrived in Santiago today with a field hospital and medical supplies.

1. Thank you for the update and the excellent photos. Whole lot of suffering going on there,
surely hoping it can be lessened rapidly.

Hillary Clinton is working hard at her job. No doubt it's hard learning the right level from which to speak after being both the First Lady and expecting, no doubt, to wind up as the President, herself.

I noticed the government actually asked grocery stores to open their doors to the citizens and allow them to take what they needed. It's so possible these young guys believed they had to look out for their families, hope the courts will listen to them carefully and be kind to them if that's the case.

I'd give you a rec., rabs, but some asshole got here first, immediately after you put up the post, and gave you an unrec. It happens to me, too. Big surprise, there! It wasn't a Democrat, as we know.

Thanks for the news. Are you surprised to see "Two Breakfasts" show up riding several white horses? He has been less than a civilized neighbor all this time to Bachelet.

2. Re Two Breakfasts

Yes, the appearance of Alan Garcia in Santiago does come sort of a surprise to me, considering that this week Chile is scheduled to respond to Peru's claims of a big chunk of territorial waters that Garcia's government filed last year at the World Court in The Hague.

Looks like a publicity stunt by Garcia for internal consumption in Peru.

We had a guest, a commercial engineer who lives in Lima, over the weekend. He was tellig us of the massive corruption under the administration of Alan Garcia and how the violence has escalated to pre-Fujimori days. Our friend totally detests Garcia.

About the looting, we were watching TV from Chile on Saturday and saw people taking food and milk out of a LIDER supermarket in Concepcion.

Most people do now know it but the LIDER chain is controlled by Walmart of the United States. Most of the fresh fruit Walmart sells comes from Chile through its holdings there.

As for the unrecs, yep, have noticed you are often a target. Unrecs don't bother me considering the assorted ratas, skunks, ner-do-wells and other pitiful insectos who post them.

4. Short video of instant earthquake struck

Video taken in a pizzeria in Santiago. Note the lamps shaking and chunks of the ceiling caving in. Also shows scenes of damge in the city of Curico south of Santiago and waves of undetermined size in the Concepcion region. Do not think anyone was able to videotape the big tsunami that hit the coastline because it was dark at the time.
