Pepe Lobo crushes Santos in Honduras

Which was expected all along.

Globo reading exit polls giving National Party's Lobo a double-diget lead over Liberal Party candidate Santos. Giving only percentages but not the actual number of votes cast.

That complicates things even more because as of tonight Honduras has a president-elect, a de facto golpista in the presidential palace, and the democratically elected president under protection in the Brazilian Embassy. (Zelaya and his wife were not able to cast a vote today.)

Globo saying that the real winner today was the resistance's abstention, which now is 57.7 percent (but which may increase).

1. A Telesur reporter said that only between 30-35% voted.
Do you think Globo's numbers are better, rabs?

2. Think abstention is going to be around 60-65 percent

The 57.7 Globo reported was based on votes that had been tallied early. Radio said the number was expected to go up as figures come in from the hinterlands. There was a report earlier that in some isolated, rural communites only three (3) people had voted.

Earlier Zelaya said the information he had (at noon) indicated a 75 percent abstention. But that was at noon, so suspect the percentage went down somewhat.

Problem for Hillary and her cohorts will be whether to recognize elections in which only 30-35 percent of the voting population cast a ballot.

Lobo, the president-elect, was voted in with only around 54 percent of the 30-35 percent who bothered to vote, which is hardly a mandate.

3. Well, it doesn't really matter what kind of a mandate Lobo has. One false move and he's in
Costa Rica.

4. Just heard that the Telesur reporter was jostled

by a group of golpista-invited "observers" at the hotel where the results are to be announced.

She was cornered and threatened as she was reporting live to Telesur on the large number of abstentions. Other foreign journalists helped her leave the hotel. A Colombian reporter said she was in tears.

There is a internal problem in the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, which is the reason for the tardiness in announcing the presidential results. Appears the argument among the tribunal members is how much to falsify the number of votes and the margin of victory for Pepe Lobo.

6. Globo just confirmed there is a serious problem

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal is holding an emergency meeting at this hour and a fierce argument has erupted because they cannot agree on how to "tapar" (cover) the election disaster today. The tribunal has been in session for almost five hours.

The effort to "manipulate" the results could even wind up affecting Lobo, according to Globo reporter.

The tribunal had promised that first official results were to be announced two hours after polls closed but there have been none and international news agencies have been left in limbo.

It is turning out to be a real circus.
