Wild celebration in Honduras .-- going to the World Cup

Permutations turned out just right for the catrachos ... Honduras beat El Salvador 1-0.

USA scored a last minute goal to tie Costa Rica 2-2, which put Honduras in the World Cup.

For a few hours at least the political crisis will take a back seat.

1. Whoa! This is a real strange turn, isn't it?
It could add a very unusual turn to this strange situation for a little while.

Guess they don't dare go for a curfew tonight!

2. Celebration will go on all night

First time Honduras goes to the World Cup since 1982, thanks to the USA's last minute heroics against Costa Rica, which led 2-0 for most of the match.

I am happy for the Honduran pueblo after all it has been through the last 110 days.

3. That's what I was thinking, too! If ever a people deserved a celebration-it's the Honduran people
for their amazing courage and persistence in opposing this coup. I hope they have good news tomorrow, that their resistance movement and the solidarity of other Latin American countries and leaders, has resulted in the coup standing down, and Zelaya and democracy being restored.

I'm happy for them tonight! I hope they have reason to celebrate all week!

4. you mean last second
that was definitely the last play of the match. heartbreaker for CR though as they would have gone instead of Honduras. although CR still can make it but they have to face Uruguay for that spot in a home and away series.

6. Goriletti declares national holiday tomorrow
and he thanked the "gringos" for making it possible for Honduras to go to the World Cup.

There are thousands of people celebrating in the streets of the capital and across the country. Fireworks, caravans of horn-honking vehicles.

Of course the golpista El Heraldo had to take a swipe at Zelaya. It said the "so-called zelaya resistance had hoped for a defeat against El Salvador because the Honduran national team represents the oligarchy."

11. I missed your photos the first time through. Must be the laptop I'm using.
It's a little goofy.

Wanted to make sure to tell you it's WONDERFUL seeing those beautiful smiles on these happy people. You can really get a sense of high spirits, and energy just looking at them.

Thanks for including the photos.

10. Believe me, this is the MOST important thing going on for Honduras now
Nothing, nothing it's bigger that soccer and qualifying for the World Cup. The crowds for this will be much, much bigger than what Zelaya or Micheletti could ever expect supporting them

From now until the World Cup turnament finishes THIS will be the first and foremost matter on the Hondurans mind.

Anyone who doubts this has never lived in Honduras, and doesn't know/understands the culture of the nation

14. That's a very large claim, reminiscent of other large claims
made by other new posting locals.
