Date: January 6, 2009 Author: Newswatch Desk

Bolivian President Evo Morales is planning to launch a state-run daily newspaper later this month which would act as a counterbalance to the "anti-government" local media, Reuters has reported.

"The state's going to have its own newspaper and I've told the media team that we should launch it on January 22," Morales was quoted as saying by the official news agency ABI on Sunday. During a radio interview, Morales accused some Bolivian media of attacking his administration and said the nascent newspaper will be charged with "gathering the truth," ABI reported. January 22 will mark Morales' third anniversary at the helm of South America's poorest country.

1. ‘Bolivia to have official daily to tell truth’
‘Bolivia to have official daily to tell truth’

Bolivian President Evo Morales announced the founding later this month of an official newspaper by which his government can defend itself from “the lies” of the private media and tell the people “the truth.” The first indigenous president in Bolivia’s history, Morales has often been at loggerheads with Bolivia’s privately-owned media outlets for their open criticism of his populist and socialist policies. Since becoming president in 2006, Morales has boosted financial and technological support of state-owned media outlets — Patria Nueva, ABI news agency and TVB television — with the help of a 1.5-million-dollar loan from Venezuela, Bolivia’s chief ally in the region. The Morales administration also enjoys strong support from community radios run by farming unions across rural Bolivia. afp
