What's the name of that left-wing alternative to Amazon?
And while we're at it (those of us who have had it with our government over the Assange situation), has anybody used moneybookers.com as an alternative to paypal?

6. Powell's is my choice online and a must when I'm in the area:
http://www.powells.com/

I used to work for Barnes and Noble and they are decidely left and decent to workers as well--but Powell's is my paradise.

8. For online book shopping: www.bookdepository.com/

The Book Depository. Free shipping worldwide on all our books.

About The Book Depository Group
The Book Depository Group is the UK's largest dedicated online bookseller offering the largest range of titles in the world, available for ship within 48 hours. Founded in 2004 to make 'All Books To All' we focus on selling 'less of more' rather than 'more of less', differentiating ourself from other retailers who increasingly focus on bestsellers.

All books available to All
Currently, The Book Depository Group is able to ship over 2.5 million unique titles, within 48 hours, from our fulfillment centre in Gloucester, United Kingdom. This figure is increasing everyday. Apart from publishers, distributors and wholesalers, we even list and supply books from other retailers!

Free Worldwide Delivery
The Book Depository Group is an international bookseller shipping our books free of charge, worldwide, to nearly 90 countries. By working with various world postal authorities and other carriers, we are always looking to add more countries to this list and will work to do so in the future.

How is it going?
The Book Depository Group is the fastest growing book distributor in Europe, shipping to thousands of customers every day throughout the world. We have over a million customers currently and a reputation for extremely high service levels. A large percentage of our customers are very loyal, placing orders with us time and time again.

The Long Tail: why are we making as many books available as possible?
Of the 30 million titles ever printed in the English language only a few million of these are in print. We are seeking to make available as many of these titles as possible (and working to do the same with foreign language titles). This way, we will have the largest breadth of titles available in the world. Where books are no longer in print or poorly available we are seeking to make them available again by republishing. We do this through our Dodo Press imprint.

Dodo Press
At present, our Dodo Press imprint is re-publishing over one hundred out of print or difficult to find titles every week. We're making tens of thousands of titles available to readers that were previous impossible to get hold of.

Publishers and Distributors
As our main aim is to list as many books as possible, we are very keen to talk to publishers and distributors about supply arrangements. We are currently working hard to integrate with distributors and larger publishers and are also developing ideas on how to work with smaller publishers. Publishers and distributors wishing to add books to our catalogue should contact Steve Potter, Steve Potter .

R&D
We are supporting research and innovation through number of our projects, part of our internal systems are developed based upon research findings of a PhD project at the University of Bath http://www.bath.ac.uk/comp-sci/research/, we also partner with a group of world top class Universities in supporting the development of AgnetScape middleware http://www.agentscape.org/.

Supporting Up for Reading
The Book Depository Group is proud to support the work of Down Syndrome Education International. Children with Down syndrome sometimes need additional help to learn. Reading is something that young people with Down syndrome can be good at. Every year they run 'Up for Reading'. The Book Depository Group has been involved in supporting Down Syndrome Education International by imaginative activities such as our original bookmark artwork.

Supporting Milan to Mongola in a Micra
An epic, and possibly mad car journey, in a Nissan Micra from Milan to Mongolia to raise money for The Christina Noble Children's Foundation. You can read about their progress at www.milangolia.com.
