16-year-old was behind wheel of big rig that crashed off 210 Freeway

December 7, 2010 | 10:54 am

An unlicensed 16-year-old driver was behind the wheel of a big rig that careened off the 210 Freeway in Lake View Terrace early Tuesday, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The teenager's father was supposed to be driving the truck, which was carrying a load of whipped cream and sour cream, but he let his son take the wheel while he took a nap, said CHP officer Miguel Luevano.

The 16-year-old fell asleep and lost control of the rig, crashing it into the edge of a mobile home park near Osborne Street about 3:38 a.m.

No serious injuries were reported, but firefighters initially had trouble locating the father and son because they were hiding in nearby bushes.

1. At least the cream didn't end up all over the road

And there can be only one reason why the father would let the son take the wheel at 3AM and take a nap...because he's done it many times before.

Cue the Reno 911 theme!

3. Really, shouldn't we let the free market determine how old you have to be to drive?
:sarcasm:

4. Why didn't the father just say he was driving and he fell asleep?
Quick switcharoo and no one gets in much trouble.

7. It was a mess
I was stuck in that traffic this morning for an hour. Screwed up all of the traffic on the 210, 5, and 118. By the time i drove by at 8:50 a.m., two big rig tow trucks had righted the truck and were winching it up the embankment. All because some idiot let his kid drive his truck.
