95. I heard him say he was "itching for a fight" with Republicans
Even Maddow was forced to run clip after clip of him pledging to fight with Republicans, battle with them, debate with them. I didn't hear him rail at liberals today. I heard him rail at purists. No one on the Left should be a purist. We compromise for the moment. Then we fight for the future.

84. If he was all concerned about the TRUTH
then why didn't he call the Republicans on the LIE that tax breaks for the wealthy stimulate the economy and create jobs? He compromised on that very position, that these breaks will help the economy.

Tax breaks for the wealthy DO NOT STIMULATE THE ECONOMY. THEY DO NOT CREATE JOBS. They create more zero's in offshore bank accounts.

94. what? that he bent over backwards for the repugs?
That those wealthy tax extensions and the inheritance tax bonus is going to hurt us more. That some people are still going to fall, because unemployment extension will not be for everyone. That the so-called compromise-see he got us the child tax credit (a repug created credit) and the student tax credit and earned income tax credit (KO stated it's included in the stimulus bill). So besides, some people may get their unemployment extended and we still get a tax break (well, at least those who still have a job), how big was the compromise? Looks like the repugs must be doing their greedy happy dance. These tax breaks will further harm us--just watch the social safety net go bye-bye--especially cuts in SS.

He takes it to Republicans 99% of the time, that gets ignored. He takes it to the harshest critics coming from the left once in a blue moon and its the only thing he ever does. Thats just how it works around here.

23. Disagree with above comments
I noted a much harsher tone toward Republicans in his Presser. He more than once pointed out their intransigence; that tax cuts for the rich are their principal doctrine set in stone, and that they can no longer sit around and point fingers and say no; next year they will have to govern, and other comments concerning where the Republicans are the obstruction on many points in which the country agrees with him.

38. Well, if you're relying on the angry crowd, you're going to get a distorted perspective
It was a sane, reasonable argument about a pragmatic choice in the face of obvious Republican obstruction.

That will NOT fly at this place any longer. This place is becoming a very insular bubble. That ain't good.

107. As one of Obama's detractors for a long time..
... I will agree that this bill isn't THAT bad, we did get SOMETHING for our compromise.

That said let me explain to you why the base has HAD IT with Obama. It is not just this bill, it is the entire tenor of his presidency. He is JUST TOO SOFT WITH THE REPUBLICANS.

In this speech where he complains that the Reps "took hostages" that is the FIRST TIME I CAN REMEMBER that he sent a serious verbal message about the actions of the Reps. He should have been talking this way since DAY ONE because that is how they have been treating him and the country SINCE DAY ONE.

And FINALLY, I beleive a better compromise could have been reached. What about "Ok, we'll move the bar to $1 million, tax cuts only expire on people making over a million"? SOMETHING for god's sake. But no, it's like he has no imaginiation or desire to make a tough deal at all.

As a Democrat, I just get tired of getting NOTHING even though supposedly my team is in office. Obama has screwed up so many times now he will have to move mountains to get his base back, and he' not up to it.

Obama getting angry and pounding the podium? wasn't he too weak when he didn't do that?

what the fuck do you want? a switch handy by your keyboard you can push and have Obama display whatever emotion you feel is best for him at the moment?

59. Let's try this again.
They wanted Obama fighting for them, not against them. It's not about emotion, it's about inaction. All the pretty speeches in the world...all the false pounding in the world, isn't going to change the fact that he's "compromising" where there shouldn't be "compromise".

64. seriously, what did you want that he could do in this situation?
I totally agree with him that the stakes were too high for too many people and that playing games now will hurt those people. How the fuck can anyone come up with more hate for Obama for doing this? What if the tax cuts expired for the middle class - that is a lot of money annually for a whole lot of people. But this is ok because you have some political thing you want that is more important? Does Obama have the Senate votes, ? no, he doesn't. Will the Repugs all of a sudden develop human charateristics, no they won't. What about the fake Dems? will they all of a sudden change their minds and for what reason?

What do you want? For Obama to have gambled on this hoping that somehow, by some magic dust, that he would be able to get all you want in January? What is going on with people here and their ability to think?

It's established that the Republicans are obstructionist asshole scums of the earth, but maybe we need more talk about them here and what they are instead of this flailing about at Obama without really understanding what the process and the set up of the system is.

83. Make. Them. Vote. Against. It.
Put the unemployment benefits up as a separate vote. Make them vote it down if they want and explain it. Put up the middle class tax cuts separate from the upper, upper class and make them explain each vote.

How frickin' hard is that? We are still the party in power, right?

108. Are you a parent?
Have you ever seen a child throw a temper tantrum at the store? Obama is the parent, the screaming child is the Republicans. Rather than tell the child, "NO! You will not get that piece of candy until you learn to behave!" and remove the child from the store, Obama caves to the screaming child in the store. EVERY DARN TIME. Now, the kid may be spoiled, but it's really the parent at fault here. The adults in the room can't live by just responding to the crying around them, they have to set the agenda... y'know... find the child's interests, make sure there are activities, watch them closely, etc.

Face it, Obama has been a poor "parent" to this country. Sometimes the screaming child needs a reality check. Sometimes the child needs to NOT GET what it wants (despite the fact it will make the Holidays miserable for the rest of the family).

75. I have to admit.....
I am one of those that hoped Obama and the Dems would not compromise on the tax cuts. But after watching the press conference, I was reminded about the fact that Obama deals in the world of reality. We all enjoy the luxury of taking a political stance, without having to deal with the consequences of those positions.

If the Dems did not compromise, UE extensions, middle class tax cuts, EIC & child tax credits, and more would all be gone. I think Obama did the right thing in this situation. However, where he went wrong, was allowing this issue to be put off until now. The timing of this debate put Dems in the worst possible bargaiing position they could be. But one must take into consideration that this Congress has been one busy body.

So Im asking all our progressive freinds. Short of having this debate 12/2009, instead of 12/2010, what would you have liked to see Obama do in this situation. There are many people in this country who would like to see nothing more than UE extension and other Dem policies expire. So, the threat of these things expiring aren't really rallying point, IMO.

What would a progressive have done in Obama shoes?

93. Learned this in my husband's PTSD session today, anger is acceptable emotion
Our society frowns on males when they exhibit feelings like shame, fear, anxiety, embarrassment etc. but it's OK to show anger. So maybe he's ashamed of what he's become and the anger comes out in the place of those feelings.

Or he's lost his mind and forgot his promises and what so many people (including moderate Republicans) wanted him to do when they put him in office.

102. yes actually I do- You said it yourself:
"he was elected to serve me AND all Americans"- that's exactly what he's doing.

I'd love for him to take my wish list and grant them all. I'd have us out of Iraq and Afghanistan- gitmo'd be closed- we'd have universal health care- invest heavily in renewable SAFE energy- establish a living wage- I could go on and on, but you get my drift.

We ALL are disappointed that we can't get what we want achieved. Pres. Obama included- where do you think his anger came from today? Do you think he LIKES not being able to do what he set out to do when he began this journey???

He isn't the messiah. I personally never had any illusions that he was. But it is clear that some people did whether they realize it or not. This is the REAL WORLD. We work with what we have, and do the very best we can. And when things don't go as well as we wanted, we don't quit. We pick ourselves up, dust off the dirt and take on the next job.

It all looks so easy from out here. We all think we know just how 'we' would be able to make everything work.

He's doing his best for us. "Yes WE Can". not "Yes He Will".

g'nite.
