MSNBC Wants to Hear from You - Will Affect What their Reporters Cover
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18826755/

Are you worried or outraged by something in your neighborhood, in our government or across the nation? What gnaws at you but seems to go unmentioned in the national political campaigns?

This is your chance to drive the conversation about what really matters in America.

Here’s how it works: You tell us about the specific issues that are most important to you and explain how they affect your daily life. We also want to hear how you would solve the problem.

Then, during the first week of each month leading to the 2008 presidential election, come to MSNBC.com to vote on the issues that our readers raise. Your vote will help determine our reporters’ assignment for the month and the focus of our online “Gut Check” forum.

To participate, fill out the form below and provide your contact information so our reporters can get in touch with you if your submission is chosen. We will not publish or share the information you provide.

1. I would use it to complain about the media - but I guess that won't get aired.
although MSNBC would be at the top of the "better" outlets - due to Olbermann.

14. I think you should. I just did, myself. The media is key to ALL the other

issues and problems. Whether they cover it or ignore it, and if they cover it, HOW they do so.

That is KEY. I suggested that while they chortle about how the Dems caved, THEY THEMSELVES do so, every time they lob a softball at bush, or don't ask him MORE tough follow-ups - like, ask him WHY he's trying to scare people? Remind them of what FDR once said about fearing nothing but fear itself, and why the whole undertone of this regime has been to keep people scared and off their guard, so they're easily manipulatable. Suggest they replace tucker and scarborough with flat-out liberals for some REAL fairness and balance, perhaps give tucker's show to Ed Shultz, perhaps give the morning show to a simulcast of Randi Rhodes.

Point out to them the reason why so many people thought, for so long, that Saddam was involved with al Qaeda AND 9/11 - BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT WAS REPORTED, INFERRED, INSINUATED - in many ways overt AND covert. THAT'S ALL ANYBODY HEARD. VERSIONS OF THAT. There was NO attention paid to any other point of view because it's wall-to-wall conservatives on the air. I suggested retiring people like pat buchanan, dana "the smirk" milbank, and the completely useless and fawning richard wolffe, in favor of more Jonathan Turley, Greg Palast, Joe Conason, and Sy Hersh.

I said there was nobody connecting the dots so that people could START to understand WHY America thinks that the country's going in the wrong direction - by a factor of more than FOUR TO ONE - and why it NEEDS to be pointed out that this has happened under republi-CON rule and republi-CON policy-making. The dots HAVE to be connected.

I said personally, I've seen people depressed about more than just their own little troubles - they're angry and depressed and disspirited and discouraged and upset about what's happening to our country, to our system of justice, to the accountability to which our "leaders" are supposed to be held. I said it shows itself in the classrooms and homes when we're trying to teach our kids about honor and responsibility and honesty, and yet EVERY NIGHT on the evening news, we see over and over and over again that crime pays, the wrong-doers are allowed to get away with it, nobody seems to care, and nobody's interested in even calling a LIAR what he is - a LIAR - SPECIFICALLY as it involves the rogue "president" who's leading us over a cliff.

I said I wanted more liberals on the air, I wanted more and tougher questions and follow-ups, MORE investigation into WHY these things happen, WHAT EXACTLY they mean or are trying to fool you with when the White House spins - that EVERYTHING they say needs to be looked at closely and dispassionately and "Truth-Squad'ed." Our media needs to call bush a LIAR because that's what he is. AND our media needs to start making a case for IMPEACHMENT.

And if they're hesitant because it might not get ratings, I suggested they look at Olbermann, and try to replicate what he's doing and saying. His numbers speak for themselves.

If you're really concerned about the media (which is VERY reasonable to be concerned about), YOU SHOULD SAY SO. TELL THEM. One complaint from me won't change anything. One from you by yourself won't do much, either. BUT IF WE BOTH are complaining about the SAME THING, AND OTHERS JOIN US IN MAKING THAT SAME COMPLAINT, the numbers will speak for themselves (as with Olbermann's) and they'll HAVE to pay attention.

2. I'm skeptical.
Why don't I just tell them what they think we want to see?
Can you please give us something like the Laci-&-Scott-Peterson-drama, or, OJ-Simpson-type courtroom minutiae, or, young, attractive, white, missing, women?

I mean, we ALL wished OJ Simpson courtroom drama would last forever. And, when Scott Peterson went to prison, we ALL felt wistful sorrow because the story was over! How sad to not have anything more to report about America's Deadly Sweethearts, Scott and Laci.

:sarcasm:

4. My responses:
What issue facing our country today is most important to you or has the greatest impact on you, your family and neighbors?

Many issues concern me, but the one I would like you to consider is bias, censorship, and the influence of corporate and government entities on journalism. In short, I am concerned that I only find out from the media information that the government and corporations approve, not the truth. The Fairness Doctorine must be revived, as well as a dinosaur known as journalistic ethics.

I also think I'll go to my grave before I see you address this.

How does it affect you, your friends or loved ones? Tell us your story, and please be specific:

It affects my family, friends, and country because we cannot trust the information we get to make decisions in life. Didn't the founders of this country believe that an informed electorate was essential for the American system of government to function? "Informed" does not mean "inculcated" or "propagandized," by the way.

What do you think should be done to "fix" this problem?

As I mentioned, revive the Fairness Doctrine and go on an ethics witch hunt. In addition, shake off the influence of your advertisers.

5. There's no way to take this seriously
...until their parent companies get out of bed with our government. Until then, collecting the lint from my bellybutton would be a more productive use of my time.
