PayPal cuts WikiLeaks from money flow
PayPal cuts WikiLeaks from money flow

BERLIN -- Online payment service provider PayPal says in a company blog it has cut off the account used by WikiLeaks to collect donations.

The company said in a blog posting the move was prompted by a violation of its policy, "which states that our payment service cannot be used for any activities that encourage, promote, facilitate or instruct others to engage in illegal activity."

The short notice was dated Friday, and a spokeswoman for PayPal Germany on Saturday declined to elaborate and referred to the official blog posting.

Donating money to WikiLeaks via PayPal on Saturday was not possible anymore, generating an error message saying "this recipient is currently unable to receive money."

PayPal is one of several ways WikiLeaks collects donations.

1. Man, you really have the international pressure being put on anyone or anything that
assists Wiki in any way. Paypal, Amazon, they have their battles in front of them.

12. PayPal froze a DUers account once because some Freepers...
sent false allegations of fraud. That action did irreparable harm.

PayPal has a long and sordid history of freezing accounts based on nothing.

It would foolish to keep more than a few dollars in your PayPal account at any time.

31. Just because the train goes to Detroit doesn't mean you can't wait at the Boston terminal.
I really would like to believe that when assholes die, they have to face their victims before they get to 'move on'.

22. I no longer use PayPal. After what they did to Andy Stephenson,
I quit them for that anyway, but then I read an article by a former PayPal insider who said that PayPal often freezes accounts and has a way to just take the money by alleging fraud and such. I don't trust them with my money.

23. Wasn't aware they were that bad, eom. I never keep any money there, just
let it go to my card whenever have to make a purchase using them. Would never let them link to my bank account, especially now.

I may be wrong, anyone know?

I am really really tired of leaving a paper trail when so many organizations are collecting all sorts of info about us.

9. Nobody takes money orders anymore.
I sure wouldn't. If you take a money order for an Internet purchase, it's almost a coin flip as to whether or not it will be real.

Or, as FraudGuides puts it: "If you want to ensure you aren't accepting a counterfeit money order, never accept one from a stranger unless you have some way of verifying its authenticity." That pretty much rules out everyone.

They are starving the beast and if we are going to support Wikileaks, it may just take a bit of idiocy.

13. How you can still donate to WikiLeaks

How You Can Help WikiLeaks Survive

Share a Wikileaks release with a friend. Spread our wallpapers. Donate to support vital infrastructure. If you believe democracy and transparency go hand in hand, now is the time to stand and say: "The world needs Wikileaks."
Donate

WikiLeaks brings truth to the world by publishing fact-based stories without fear or favor. You can help support our independent media by donating financially.

Our organisation exists because of the work of many volunteers who have contributed thousands of hours to building WikiLeaks from the ground up. But we still need donations to pay for computers, expert programmers and other bills. You choose how much you can donate, we don't recommend any particular amount. Just do what you think is right.

There are four ways to donate:

Donate to Julian Assange Defence Fund
Online Transfer via Credit Card
Bank Transfer
Bank Transfer
Paypal via Wau Holland Foundation

16. And yet millions to corporate candidates...
Again, does anyone still believe in the possibility of the enlightened corporation? Or that the system set up for monitoring "terrorist" finances wouldn't be turned against you?

Arschlöcher, fine, perhaps a few thousand surrogates will volunteer to collect funds and we can only hope that one Pay-not-your-Pal employee with a conscience will buy a thumbdrive today.

29. How about a gift debit card bought with cash?
Could be used to donate online, or to mail.

A money order would be ok to mail too, if bought with cash. Since it's a donation and not a purchase, there's nothing for WikiLeaks to worry about fraud over.
