16. unfavorable. but then I'm old and can remember presidents
who didn't take prisoners. A good follow up might be how old are you and what did that do to your vote?

6. Unsure with hope. I'm usually favorable and give him the benefit of the doubt, but
if they don't stand by this tax thing I'll have to wonder if what I think of him is accurate, or just what I want to believe.

I'm pretty fed up with Afghanistan, too, especially after seeing/hearing the guests today on Ratigan.

I'd throw a little disillusionment in there, too.

20. I like him much much better than Bush, Bush, Reagan, or Nixon. I find him a more effective
liberal than Clinton, though I think he lacks Clinton's brilliant political self-preservation instincts. He's getting a constant PR-hammering the way Carter got a constant PR-hammering, but Carter remains one of my real heroes, and I currently expect my long-term impression of Obama will be rather favorable

28. Actually, he's not much more liberal than Nixon
Nixon continued an unpopular war, supported health care reform (that didn't pass), and supported civil rights legislation. http://www.nixonera.com/library/domestic.asp However, he was a homophobe. The jury is out on Obama considering he hasn't ended DADT. He's not openly homophobic like Nixon for sure. Nixon put forth the the war on drugs, oops. http://www.ontheissues.org/Celeb/Richard_Nixon_Drugs.htm

Nixon is what political scientists once called a "moderate" Republican, a breed that no longer exists, and he was certainly more liberal than Goldwater and Reagan.

Anyhow, I don't think Nixon belongs in that list with Reagan and the Bushes. .

Peace,
Tex Shelters

35. Do you actually remember the Reagan era? Do you remember that the Reagan administration supported
the apartheid government in South Africa, justifying that support with anti-communist rhetoric? Do you remember how many Reagan administration officials were eventually convicted on corruption charges? Do you remember Reagan's escalation of the arms race? Do you remember his attacks on unions?

I'll say straight out: you don't know what you're talking about

33. Oh, yes, Obama IS much more liberal than Nixon. Nixon was a red-baiting opportunist
who pulled every dirty trick in the book, using the IRS and FBI to harass his political enemies, and he had a vicious foreign policy. You may not find it on the internet, but back in the Nixon years phone calls to some government agencies were automatically forwarded instead to industry lobbyists. Don't get me started on Nixon: remembering those days still makes my blood boil

23. History of DU
When I was posting here before the 2008 election and questioned Hilary for saying "If I knew then what I know now" I got my posts deleted. It was very undemocratic. I wasn't saying that I hate her, I was just saying that she might not be the best choice because she supported the war and was duped. I was also deleted for criticizing Pelosi for war votes as well as other Democrats. However, I was praising Kucinich, Boxer and Barbara Lee for their stands.

There was also a lot of praise for Obama from almost everyone, and I was also defending him against criticism. Now it seems Obama is fair game and this site is genuinely democratic.

Here's to democracy. I support Obama, but I am extremely disappointed. Eventually he will change course of accept a loss in 2012 (unless he's running against Palin).

Peace,
Tex Shelters

31. the administration would be happy to view these poll results
I'm not sure many at DU understand what happened last month, the president saw the middle that got him elected evaporate, and in order to win them back, he needs to infuriate those on the bleeding edge of the Democratic left, which constitutes the overwhelming majority of this site's members. The reaction at DU is a Rorschach test to determine how successful he'll be adopting what will be viewed as moderate positions.

32. Then he and his Administration are fools.
If he cannot figure out that the reason the GOP made gains in the midterms is precisely because he did not fight for the people who voted him into office, then he is himself without hope to ever reconnecting with the middle or the left in this country.

He has morphed into a Republican. He can't even represent or articulate the Democratic positions well any longer. Every move appears to be another attempt to appease the GOP, despite overwhelming evidence that it will not change anything about their positions. And in the process, he is not "bringing people together," he is ostracizing millions of Americans who now have NO representation in this government for THEIR viewpoints.

the last eight decades have resulted in losses for the party in power.

Losing the House was not unsual. Keeping the Senate was.

I have no question that he is a smart man. Much smarter than the idiot that was in the White House previously. I just don't get the impression he knows how to play politics though. I mean, once he got the office. I just wished that he would at least give the appearance of giving a shit.
