President Obama seeks "common ground" bi-partisanship with Republicans. Isn't that wonderful! BBI
Just what we need. Some bigger doses of that bi-partisanship and cooperation with Republicans as we move "ahead" with big cuts in government programs that benefit working people, the elderly, the poor and the sick. BBI

Obama, GOP cautiously optimistic post-summit
'We agreed that there must be some sensible common ground,' says president
Associated Press
November 30, 2010

WASHINGTON — Reaching no quick fixes, President Barack Obama and Republican leaders in Congress on Tuesday vowed to seek a compromise on their sharply different views about tax cuts before year's end.

"The American people did not vote for gridlock," Obama said following the session. "They did not vote for unyielding partisanship. They're demanding cooperation and they're demanding progress and they'll hold all of us, and I mean all of us, accountable"

The president said that while differences remain over how to address the expiring tax cuts, there was "broad agreement" that both parties can work together to resolve the issue.

"We agreed that there must be some sensible common ground," Obama said.

Obama said he also planned to hold more sessions with lawmakers, a point that Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia took note of and applauded. "I was encouraged by the president's remarks regarding his perhaps not having reached out enough to us in -- in the last session," Cantor said, "and that this meeting was the beginning of a series in which he hoped that we could work together in a different fashion for the benefit of the American people, given the problems that we face."

7. That's in many other articles. You haven't heard about the various deficit commissions and

Obama's statements about the need to make the "tough decisions" on cutting social programs?

This is all news to you!

Oh well, I'm sure many DU'ers can provide you with credible links if you need to learn about so-called "entitlement" cuts. President Obama has made it clear on several occasions that "everything is on the table" in cutting government programs.

9. all hearsay
Apparently, you've never heard of the many presidential commission reports over the years that have been completely ignored. The one you're basing your own speculation on is DOA in Congress. But, you go on . . . show me where the President has actually proposed cutting social programs and entitlements.

13. Why does he have to say that?
He could easily say, "Social Security and Medicare are off the table not only because they are funded by the beneficiaries, but because they also help to provide a safety net for the most vulnerable members of our society".

14. That's a good point, and a very good example of what could have been said.
I just meant the generally "we want to work together" sentiment, although to be sure, it hasn't served him well.

3. Please explain to me how any legislation will be accoplished without compromise.
With the current minority in the House, and the thin majority in the Senate.

Unless you want total legislative gridlock, there will be compromises made by both parties, under the threat of a presidential veto if they refuse to work with Democrats.

Or do you want a dictator, that rules by fiat?

5. Cantor - Obama "didn't reach out enough"...are you fucking joking?
Don't make me laugh...he bent over backwards on health care, gave you arseholes EVERYTHING you asked for, and you rotten bastards walked away from it anyway...

Oh, and what joy fills my heart that Obama wants to compromise MORE with these very same arseholes that have spent the last 24 months kicking him in the nuts and making him ask them to do it again..

You MUST be joking.

Change?

Bite me.

12. Exactly! That's the role they play in this stage performance.

Meanwhile the Wall Street and corporate tycoons continue to enrich themselves while they put the screws to us.
