<3:17 p.m.> Leaks revealed in Basel

Copies of tomorrow’s Der Spiegel have been sold in Basel, Switzerland (translation).
Contents are being exposed on Twitter by Symor Jenkins (translation).
Among what can be read in Der Spiegel:

* “Obama prefers to look East than West.”
* “Obama has no emotion towards Europe.”
* “The US sees the world as a confrontation between 2 superpowers. The EU plays a secondary role.”
* “Europe is not so important for the US.”
* From the cover, we read that Ahmadinejad “is Hitler”, Sarkozy is “an emperor without clothes”, Karzai is “driven by paranoia”.

* From the inside articles, scanned by Symor Jenkins (page 1, page 2), we learn that the US have a snitch inside the German government, a member of the liberal FDP party. German chancellor Angela Merkel is described as barely creative and risk-averse.

WikiLeaks says latest leak covers 'every major issue'

By Natacha Yazbeck, AFP November 28, 2010 7:02 AM

AMMAN, Nov 28, 2010 (AFP) - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said on Sunday the imminent release of classified US documents by the whistle-blower website will cover "every major issue" in the world today.

"The material that we are about to release covers essentially every major issue in every country in the world," he told reporters in Jordan by video link when asked if the new leaks again focused on US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

2. The whole farkin business sounds like a high-toned gossip column.
At least so far.

I'm one who really hates government secrecy and thinks that sunlight is the best disinfectant and all that, but if all this is about is who's pissing in whose Cheerios, then I see no particular value. I guess we'll have to wait & see what's really in there. Could be that this personality stuff is a cover & distraction from the more significant contents.

8. I was a little more impressed with the stuff about
Germany warning Bush before 9-11, & their refuting his lies about having gotten their blessing to go into Iraq.

6. Hope there are some facts in this document dump. What is out so far is opinion.
Facts can be verified, but an opinion that "Europe is not so important for the US" is quite useless.

I think these leaks are being oversold, leading to the actual content receiving a big yawn on release.

I could be wrong (and I'm often wrong :) ), but that's what it's starting to sound like.

15. I really doubt that this is disinfo.
If it was disinfo they wouldn't be posting images of the magazine pages that any German speaker could read.

What would be the point anyway? The info is coming out soon.

16. Media outlets work for their governments
Edited on Sun Nov-28-10 12:21 PM by Catherina
Most governments have requested a say in what leaks get published and which ones don't- national security and all that. That's why I wrote that. I want to read what these big media outlets report but that's secondary to wanting to see the originals.

Wikileaks/org is down, under a DOS attack.

There would be no point in doing that if those media outlets were going to release all the information, accurately

But good stuff is already coming out.

From the inside articles, scanned by Symor Jenkins (page 1, page 2), we learn that the US have a snitch inside the German government, a member of the liberal FDP party. German chancellor Angela Merkel is described as “rarely creative and risk-averse”. Revelations about the German government go into so much details that Spiegel writes that

“The US is better informed about the secrets of German politics than German politicians themselves.”

18. I'm actually skeptical that the DDOS attack is coming from a government or governments.
Some of Wikileaks mirrors are still accessible, I would think a government attack would cover all bases and they would all be inaccessible. It may simply be that thousands, or even millions, of people are all trying to access wikileaks.org and the servers can't handle it.

As you say, good stuff is already coming out.

19. In diplomacy, opinions matter.
How can one nation trust another in international negotiations when one expresses the opinion that they are not imporatnt? Doesn't that rather color the seriousness of the diplomatic efforts? Isn't there a straight line between that attitude and "I don't give a damn what Germany says, we're going after Saddam"? While we are begging our allies for more troops in Afghanistan, we are saying they are unimportant - that doesn't change the response of those we want help from?

The US is fucking begging for money to feed its starving wife and kids, then blowing it on whores and cocaine - why would our allies ever trust us again?

It's beyond me why some people on here are trying to minimize this. This can have major repercussions.
