Fox News gets Sitting Bull history wrong
By Rob Capriccioso, Today staff

Story Published: Nov 18, 2010

WASHINGTON – In the same week Fox News President Roger Ailes assailed President Barack Obama for being un-American, the Fox News website attempted to paint the president as out of touch for admiring Indian Chief Sitting Bull. But the network got its history wrong.

The manufactured controversy began earlier this month upon Obama’s release of a book meant for children called, “Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters” (Knopf, $17.99). The 31-page book is intended to pay tribute to 13 Americans whose traits he sees in his own children.

One of the historical figures Obama chose to include was Chief Sitting Bull, the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux spiritual leader who led his people as a war chief during years of resistance to U.S. government policies.

<snip>

Fox News on Nov. 15 posted a clip of an article that reviewed the book, with the network listing a headline on its website titled, “Obama Praises Indian Chief Who Killed U.S. General.”

The headline fit into the storyline Ailes was making in the mainstream press the same week, stating in an interview that Obama has a “different belief system than most Americans.”

A problem for Fox News, however, was soon pointed out by online commenters: Sitting Bull had not killed Custer. The network had posted a false headline.

1. Gee... they missed the obvious "anti-colonial" meme...
But that would put the Pilgrims in a bad light too.

"The network had posted a false headline."

But, that's their MO... that's what they do! Their viewership can only digest the headline, so they have to pack the headlines full of lies. I'm sure it happens daily.

6. Fox Noise keeping getting history all wrong. The lesson that
Custer and Fox never seems to learn is that you may have greater military might and power but if you oppress people long enough they will fight back and they just might win. Or at least that is my view. I oppose the war in Afghanistan and Iraq, and Israel's treatment of Palestinians because one day they will get together and decide to do to us what has been done to them. And then we are in for it. We will be patting down or flying nude for generations if we do not GET A CLUE!! no apologizes for caps.

8. Custer killed himself
If he had taken the equipment, main gatling guns, he would have never been killed. He was a arrogant man and he payed for it, but I think that is probably what the right wing likes about him.

9. Nobody today is still upset about Custer's defeat, except white supremacists

Custer was one of those sad men who goes off to war and finds killing to his taste. After the Civil War, such thugs tended to wander towards the frontier, where they could kill Amerindians without reprisal. And that's what Custer did

His troops murdered Black Kettle with his entire village, without provocation and inside the Cheyenne reservation, in November 1868, four years after the Third Colorado Volunteers (also without provocation) had destroyed Black Kettle's earlier encampment at Sand Creek -- where the peaceful people had been flying an American flag

Eventually, as the Amerindians dwindled, Custer decided he would rather be a mercenary in Mexico -- but he couldn't get leave from the military to do so

10. I cannot believe anyone trying to paint Custer as an innocent victim
arrogant, narcissistic, fame-whore who wanted to defeat the Indians all by himself & use that to become President...defied direct orders to not engage the Sioux, left his Gatling guns behind because they slowed him down, relied on bad recon & started a fight in the middle of an encampment. Guy was asking to get his butt kicked, & he did.

Personally, I'd tell kids to study up on Crazy Horse, but that's just me.

14. A false headline? Is that like fucking lying to the public to change political
ideas in the American voter with obvious anti-Democratic propaganda? How much longer can we stand to let a business organization hurt the American people with lies about their leader? The terrorists must LOVE Fox News, it makes their jobs easier.

16. We need a news story when (IF) Fox gets it RIGHT.
How many of their headlines are false, vs how many are true?
