Home page of Yahoo.com as we speak.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20101115/us_yb...

That's the good news. The bad news is: the video of the 14 y.o. gay kid in Ann Arbor has gone viral.

Here's a sample of readers' comments.

Mother Jones, we gotta long way to go.

To wit:

How does a 9yr. old kid know that they are gay?

Kids do not have the same rights as adults; for example, kids have to go to school. There is no choice involved. It follows, then, that if a kid has no choice of whether or not to be there, they should be provided with a safe and generally positive environment. Verbal abuse, bullying, and general douchebaggery should be stopped by the adults that are responsible for the environment.

That being said, the kids that were kicked out of class (for being douchebags) are allowed to have their opinions and can express them however they want-- on their own time. That means not on school grounds. They can also wear what they want, but not on school grounds.

Kids should be entitled to a safe, hate-free education, just as adults are entitled to a safe, hate-free workplace. The difference is that adults can make the choice to go to work dressed as they please, and can accept the consequences. Adults can call their gay boss whatever they want, and be fired accordingly. Kids do not all have the sense to act appropriately, and have little influence over the school environment, so it falls to the adults to define what is appropriate for them.

In this case, the teacher did the right thing. There should be more responsible adults like him. The school system wouldn't be as disgusting as it is if there were.

>>>>

And on and on it goes.

2. Sorry. I added the link after the fact. It's self-explanatory; or...
... ought to be.

There've been a # of threads about it/him on DU the last couple of days.

Let me know if it's still unclear after you click the link I added.

3. Ahhh Yahoo
The comments section for all their articles is littered with this type of hateful crap but this article is getting all the sick twisted hatemongers a chance to spew their disgusting ugly hate speech. Honestly, the bigoted hate speech that has become so common on the internet makes me think maybe we shouldn't let people post anonymously anymore. Would people say such ugly things so easily if their name was attached? I say anonymously....

Maybe it's better this way. We can at least know how much work there is to be done.

4. "KILLL ALLGAYS" etc???? Really? Really.
I wish there was some way we could round up all the violent bigots and make them fight each other to the death. Last one standing...I dunno, gets shot into space.

Yes, I know. Like Doc Holliday, it appears my hypocrisy knows no bounds. At least not in this case.

5. Wow
I just tried to report some of those comments for abuse and it is a big pain. You have to fill out a form with your name and address and email and enter a code and there isn't even a subject for bigotry or hate speech. No wonder that kind of stuff flourishes there. Personally I'd like to sue the shit out of news sites that don't aggressively monitor and remove such hateful comments.

Maybe it's better that we know what they're thinking than just drive it all below the surface.

A little scary... and surprising.... that they know how to use computers.

I wonder what else they know how to do.

8. Let me see if I have this right -
you went to the trouble of posting a bunch of the hate comments but could not be bothered to post (initially) the video of the 14 year old speaking. A 14 year old who is a hero in my view.

I am very suspicious of your motives.

12. Why? I explained upthread that it had been the subject of ...
.... a number of earlier threads.

Of course he's a hero. Where do I imply otherwise?

Go get a cup of coffee.

Where do you imply it? Right in your OP with the emphasis and quotes of all the nasty anti-gay posts.

You seem to think you are clever but you are not. Trot back to Freeperville and join your friends.

Edit: Your name is perfect.

11. You don't have to KNOW you're gay at 9 yro to be bashed or bullied by those who call you gay
who are your classmates or older. Maybe they've decided this based on some random trait and they're completely mistaken about your orientation. Maybe they're not mistaken. Whether they're right or wrong, or whether the target of bullying even knows the truth, that pressure can drive a kid any age to suicide.

20. Exactly. In fact.....
... I posted about such a situation earlier this year.

This is what a lot of people don't get: It's not specifically a GAY issue.

Homophobia is an EVERYBODY issue.

18. I wonder he got the "6 million gay peoplekill themselves each year" number.
I don't think there are 6 million suicides in a decade, and that is in total. I would be shocked if there are even 6 million attempts total. the number is so wrong it is distracting.

But, otherwise, great speech. Love the use of the King quote.

22. The impetuousness of youth, perhaps.
He's friggin' 14, after all. ( Unless he's a 4-ft freeper in disguise trying to discredit what is otherwise an honorable cause!!)

If 6 million of us tried every year there wouldn't be many of us left, I'm thinking.

Good catch, BTW.

Maybe be meant 600,000?

The re-posting of RW and bigoted comments makes the post overly inflammatory and offensive to many DUers. Please re-post without the bigoted comments and instead, provide a link for those who want to see them.
